Hi @karensmac,
I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble upgrading to 1Password 5. The reason that we suggest you save a new Login in the web browser is that we want to ensure that you have no data stored in the extension that has not properly synced into the main app and your database. You're right though, suggesting that a new Login be saved after 1Password has quit is a little counter-intuitive. Could you please share the link where you found these instructions?
Since I'm not sure which instructions you were following, so I'll link you to our uninstall 1Password 3 browser extensions article in our knowledgebase, which should explain the process for you.
Please do let us know if you have any further questions or concerns. :)

Just to follow up on what Megan wrote above, you should follow the steps there, but to clarify step 3 ("In your web browser, manually save a new login."), you can manually save a new Login like this:
- Visit the site's login page.
- Enter all of your credentials, but DO NOT submit the form.
- Click the 1Password button in your browser's toolbar, and select the
+
button in the upper right hand corner. - Change the title and make any notes (if desired).
- Click the Save button in the upper right hand corner.
I'm actually in the process of updating that article right now. There is certainly room for improvement. ;)
