New passwords on iOS devices aren't synching with iMac 1Password

I have new information entered on my iPhone 6+ 1Password. It synchs fine with my iPad (vs 2). It doesn't synch with my iMac (late 2013 with OS 10.4.4). I have iCloud Drive set up on all devices. I have "synch with wifi" set up. Not sure why I can't get updates on my iMac. I originally purchased 1Password directly from AgileBits. in "About 1Password" on my iMac it gives this info: Version 5.3.2/Agile Web Store so I'm thinking maybe I need to update to the App Store version but not sure. I don't want to lose the password data on my phone. Any suggestions on how to proceed? Not sure on Sync Type. In 1Password>Preferences>synch it says "Synch Primary vault with None". The options are None, Dropbox and Folder.

1Password Version: 5.3.2
Extension Version: 4.4.2
OS Version: 10.10.4
Sync Type: not sure

    Hi @B Blanchard,

Sorry you're having sync troubles. And thanks for providing such detailed information, it certainly helps us help you more efficiently! It sounds like you're a bit confused about 1Password's sync options, so I'll go through each of the main ones here in hopes of clarifying and helping you decide which option you'd like to use.

If you're attempting to sync via Wi-Fi, all devices need to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network and configured for Wi-Fi sync.

The Agile Web Store version of 1Password 5 for Mac does not currently have an iCloud sync option; due to Apple's restrictions, that requires 1Password 5 be purchased from the Mac App Store.

I searched our sales records for licenses registered to the email address associated with your forum username, and I didn't see a license for 1Password 5. So if you were planning to buy 1Password 5 and you'd like the option of syncing with iCloud, I recommend buying it from the Mac App Store. Although I should note, Apple does not allow us (or any developer) to offer upgrade discounts through their store, so it would be full price if you bought it there.

However, Dropbox sync is also an excellent choice which is available in all current versions of 1Password. It's how I sync my 1Password data, as do many of my AgileBits teammates. It's just as secure and automatic as iCloud sync, and it's a bit more flexible. If this will work for you, you'll need to create a free account with Dropbox and enable Dropbox sync in 1Password on each of your devices.

Hopefully this helps point you in the right direction, but we'll be happy to answer any other questions you may have! :)

I used Dropbox in the past so it won't be hard to set it up. One question - I have some login information on my iPhone that is newer than what's on my iMac. When I go through the setup procedure on my devices will the and start the synch will the new information on my phone be saved? In other words, is the default that all devices merge with the existing iMac 1Password information or is the latest version on all devices saved?

    Hi @B Blanchard,

1Password is pretty good at merging records and will ensure that the newer details get priority. In the event that it cannot determine which edits to an item are newer, the conflicting details will be save in a 'Conflict' section within the item so that no information is over-written or lost. If the data on your iOS device is newer than the data on your iMac, I'd recommend setting up Dropbox sync on the iOS device first, and then linking your Mac with the existing keychain in Dropbox like so:

    • Set up Dropbox on your iOS device
    • Allow Dropbox to fully sync (on your Mac, watch the little box icon in your menu bar, it will cycle when Dropbox is syncing and then stop when sync has completed.)
    • Open 1Password 5 for Mac and go to the Preferences > Sync panel
    • Select Dropbox sync and click the option to choose the sync location
    • Select the 1Password.agilekeychain file created by 1Password for iOS (default location is Apps/1Password/1Password.agilekeychain)

If you are concerned about this process though, you're welcome to create a backup of your data prior to syncing, just in case. You can create a backup in 1Password 5 for iOS by going to Settings > Advanced > Create Backup.

Please let me know if you have any further questions. :)

I had already set up my Mac for Dropbox sync. I backed up 1Password on my iPhone as suggested. I turned on sync with Dropbox on my iPhone. I only use one vault but when I tried to merge I get a warning on my phone that there is a Vault Mismatch. Under More Info I see a discrepancy in the number of items (612 in iOS vault vs 644 in the dropbox vault). The iOS vault was lasted updated on Aug 15, the Dropbox Vault on Aug 11. There is an option to 'Merge These Vaults Anyway'. What's my next best step.

    Greetings @B Blanchard,

The check is more for people with multiple Agile Keychains in their Dropbox and it's a sanity check to make sure this is what they really intended. You really do want to merge the vaults though so you're fine to proceed. Each item has individual timestamps stored inside them so the update timestamp for the overall vault isn't as important. 1Password will also adopt a cautious approach if it cannot tell which is correct when it finds different data for the same exact item in two places so don't worry. You may have a bit of manual cleaning up to do but we leave that to the user because you will know far better than 1Password.

There is a Smart Folder that I find quite useful in these circumstances. I set the Smart Folder to check All Items and look to see if Conflict fields are present. That way you can instantly see if 1Password had any problems merging and if it's stored the conflicting data awaiting your decision.

Please do let us know how you get along and if that helps
