Can't get started changing first website

Experience with 1Password:

Purchased iPassword for Mac, system 10.10.4 on an iMac

Tried to change password for a website that did not matter a lot.

Went to website where there had been an existing old password.

Went to the website I wished to change and signed in using old password

Opened 1Password from icon in Mac menu bar

If I click on the 1Password in the menu bar of the Mac and hover over the name of the website I wish to change, and choose reveal, the password I used to enter the website (the old one) shows up.

When I went to back to the 1Password in the Mac menu bar and go to “login’, the name of the website is there and a window appears that has asterisks indicating the password for that site. It has more asterisks than my old password, so it must be a random one I generated in an earlier attempts (I have had numerous attempts to get the password changed).

A window to the right appeared and in the rectangular box that reads “website” is the option to “open and fill” or to “copy”

In some of those earlier attempts, I tried to go to the website I wished to change, to the security section and enter the newly generated random password, but none of these attempts have worked. In order to enter the site I need to enter the old username and password.

Clearly things are not working for me.

I have read the instructions titled Using a saved Login”, “Changing a saved password”, and “How can I recover an unsaved password”, but they only confuse me more.

I’m pretty sure I need your help to begin using my app. Any help would be appreciated

1Password Version: 5.3

OS Version: 10.10.4
Sync Type: I do have iCloud

    Hi @jim_perley,

I'm sorry you're having some trouble changing your password on a website! Before getting to the problem, I wanted to mention something that might be a useful tip:

When I went to back to the 1Password in the Mac menu bar and go to “login’, the name of the website is there and a window appears that has asterisks indicating the password for that site. It has more asterisks than my old password, so it must be a random one I generated in an earlier attempts

The number of dots doesn't necessarily match the number of characters in the password. You'll want to reveal the password so you can see for sure if it's the one you expect to be there or not. Simply hold down the Option key on your keyboard to temporarily see the passwords. If you want to always see your passwords instead of the dots, go to the View menu and disable the option for Conceal Passwords.

Now, getting back to changing your password for a website account... The main thing to remember is that you actually need to change it in two places - in your account settings on the website, and in 1Password in your Login item for that site. But 1Password makes this fairly easy, and you can find steps to do that here: How to change a password for a site saved in 1Password

I'm not sure if that's the exact article you read which you said was confusing, but in most cases it should work just as described there. Have you tried following those steps, or have you only just read them? If you run into any problems trying to follow those steps, please let us know exactly which step doesn't work as described, and what happens instead. Also, if you're only having trouble doing this on one specific site, it might help if you can let us know the URL.

Please let us know how it all goes, thanks! :)
