Firefox 41 now enforces signed add-ons/extensions [can be disabled with preference]
After the warnings in 40 that the addon was unsigned and wouldn't work in future versions here we are at 41 (beta) and the addon is flatly refused since it's not signed (which is a good thing).
This has been known for a long while that it was coming, what's the ETA from Agile Bits here? It can't have come as a surprise to you?

Hi @tozz,
Thanks for checking in with us about this. We're happy to address this question in the following support article:
Firefox Extension Signing
Essentially, by the time 41 becomes the stable Firefox release, our extension will be signed and ready to roll. :sunglasses:
For technical as well as business reasons, we recommend using the 1Password extension in stable browser releases and cannot guarantee compatibility with every beta or prerelease browser.
I hope this helps, but feel free to ask if you have any further questions. Cheers!

Extension FAILS TO WORK IN STABLE VERSION 40!

Hi @WeilJ,
What version of 1Password are you using? My reply to @tozz was based on the version number they provided, 5.3, but I suspect you may be using 1Password 3 for Mac, which has recently run into a problem with stable Firefox 40. We've just published this support article about that issue; is this applicable to the problem you're seeing?
1Password 3 extension missing in Firefox 40 or later

I am using PW 3.8.22. v40. Switch to Firefox ESR permitted install of the PW add-on.
Surprising that Agilebits was soundly asleep at the switch and unable to see this problem coming!0 -
Hi @WeilJ,
As noted in that article: while we do provide support for folks still running 1Password 3, both the main 1Password 3 app and the 1Password 3 extension have not been updated since early 2014 — before the widget module was deprecated in Firefox 29.
It's not because we've been sound asleep, but rather wide awake and hard at work, developing, testing, releasing, and supporting new versions of the 1Password app and extensions, with many improvements and great new features for the latest OS versions on Mac, Windows, iOS and Android. For a company of just over 50 folks, all this keeps us pretty busy. When you're ready to upgrade to a newer version of 1Password, you can use your 1Password 3 key to unlock a terrific discount in our upgrade store.
I'm glad to hear that Firefox ESR is working for you with the 1Password extension. Again, we do apologize for the trouble, and thank you for using 1Password! :)

@vee Thanks for the reference to the docs, it's too bad it's not ready yet, as a developer it's unfeasible to be on the stable version of Firefox, too much going on in the web world (not to mention browser vendors keep breaking things).
I'll use the override until you have the signed version out and ready :)Cheers!

Vee,
Unfortunately, the consumer faces the demand for cost of updates in order to maintain unchanged function.0 -
Will you announce the availability of the signed extension? If so, where?
Thanks.

Hi @WeilJ,
I will admit that the removal of the widget module personally caught me by surprise and I wasn't even aware the old 1Password 3 extension relied on it. I was an Opera user when 1Password 3 was around so I never did use the extension (nor was I part of this amazing company back then). It meant that the first I realised was after the first user wrote in. I hope to improve my work related behaviour with this sort of thing going forward.
Your 1Password 3 licence is still valid and will remain valid. We will do our best to support people still running 1Password 3 but the software is no longer actively developed and when that happens, if you upgrade the software that it relies on, the operating system and browser, it will likely mean there is a point in time where it no longer works. This isn't limited to 1Password but to all software and irrespective of platform. You are correct, the consumer does face the cost of updates. We try to be as generous as we can e.g. anybody that has made a purchase since the start of 2013 has a licence for the latest version, even if that first purchase was for 1Password 3 but continued development of software and support has an ongoing cost that needs to be covered. As a consumer, when I see somebody say free upgrades for life I wonder how they intend to follow through. It's laudable sure but is it practical if that software represents their livelihood? 1Password 5 isn't simply a copy of 1Password 3 but does include many new features and lots of bug fixes. You may not find any use in any of the new features of course and the 1Password 3 Firefox Extension will continue to work in any version of Firefox earlier than version 40 as well as Chrome and Safari. Again, a future Chrome update may break this as they continue to make changes.
I can see how it would be frustrating, I fully understand but at least there are still a few options for those wishing to use 1Password 3.

Hi @japaradis,
I'm not sure what our plan will be there. We should still be able to host the Firefox extension from our normal extension page so ideally Firefox will simply download the signed extension when its released with no fuss or user interaction required. I'm hoping an announcement won't be necessary unless you have other reasons for desiring one?

Just want to know when to check and make sure Firefox has in fact downloaded the signed extension. It is disabled at present.
'Trust but verify' as the famous man once said...0 -
Hi @japaradis,
Do you run the stable or beta version of our extension? If you tend to run the beta please uninstall it, quit Firefox and then re-install. That's just for the beta though.

I run a mix: stable on two laptops and beta on the third. I'm only having problems with the third (v41.0b1). I'll try your instructions on that one. Thanks.0 -
Damn. I just got blindsided on Firefox 40.
Love 1Password. Used it for years.
Unfortunately, I run a 3.x version and I can't afford the newer version.
How is agilebits gonna support peeps like me?0 -
Again, I simply want to run my 1PW v3 without the EXCITING NEW FEATURES of V5 without the need to fork over $'s to simply continue to enjoy the features of V3. Had the PW guys have been awake they would have notified us to NOT UPGRADE FIREFOX TO 40! But they let us down.

Hi guys,
Fortunately, upgrading to 1Password 5 is not the only option you have. Instead, you can use Firefox 38 ESR, or switch to Safari or Chrome.
Please see this support article for details:

If it's not too much trouble, please post an item in your blog when the signed extension is available. It will save me the trouble of coming back here everyday hoping to find that you have addressed this problem. Thanks.

Hi @japaradis,
If you (or anyone else) would like to use a signed version of the 1Password extension for Firefox right now, at least until the signed stable version is released, we do have a beta build available. From Firefox Extension Signing:
We already have a signed version of the extension in our own beta channel for the 1Password extension. You can use the signed extension now by uninstalling the stable 1Password extension and installing the beta version:
I hope that helps. And we'll see about posting an announcement on our blog once the signed stable version comes out, although I'm not sure how it would be saving you any trouble of regularly coming here if you'd be going there just as regularly instead to check for it. :)

Had a hunch you might be checking/reading our blog via RSS, @japaradis, and didn't want to assume it so thanks for letting me know. Indeed, that does save you the trouble of regularly checking for news here on the forum. :)
A beta build of the 1Password extension will not automatically update to a stable version. The beta and stable update channels are separate. Normally a new beta build will come out at about the same time as a stable version, initially being identical feature-wise, so you're not stuck using a beta that's older than the current stable release.
