Setting a secondary vault to default
This is a feature request as much as it is asking for help. I want to set the default vault to something other than my primary vault
The way I organize my vaults is that I have separate vaults for work, personal, personal finance etc. On a deeper level there is the the primary vault which contains my most important passwords (and the secure note that is my will and a schematic of my information organization system). These include the passwords to my primary email, various devices, backup storage and passwords to my secondary vaults (ie the information needed to access ALL of my information).
I like (but don't especially need) the functionality that I can automatically access all of my vaults once I unlock my primary vault but I would prefer to by default NOT use my primary vault to add a little more depth to my security. Is there any way that I could set up secondary vaults as my default? When I open 1password or 1password mini on my laptop I would like to be queried for my personal vault by default since that is the vault I use most on that device. Whereas on my desktop I'd prefer to be queried for my work vault by default for the same reason. By extension I'd also like to use different hotkeys for my vaults on these devices.
Right now I always unlock my primary vault since apparently the additional keystroke of selecting a secondary vault is too complex for my habits. I would like to change the defaults on my devices to force myself to mostly access secondary vaults. I rarely need the passwords stored in my primary vault and it feels self defeating to create a vault of vault keys only to always unlock said vault of vaults.

I've altered the formatting of your post to make it more readable (I think some rogue tab characters were causing problems). I hope you don't mind.

Hi @Mr.Anderson,
Thanks so much for explaining your use case to us!
Is there any way that I could set up secondary vaults as my default?
Once you have multiple vaults installed on your system, it is not possible to switch up which one is primary.
When I open 1password or 1password mini on my laptop I would like to be queried for my personal vault by default since that is the vault I use most on that device. Whereas on my desktop I'd prefer to be queried for my work vault by default for the same reason.
The primary vault on your computer will always be the first one that you set up. So, if you would like to see your personal vault first on one machine, then, when setting up 1Password for the first time, you would set up the personal vault first, then all other vaults could be added as secondary vaults. It's important to keep in mind then that you will need to ensure that the Master Password of your personal vault is strong enough to protect all your other vaults, including your 'primary' (if you choose to add it as a secondary vault.)
It sounds like you already have 1Password set up on all your computers, so undoing the existing setup will require a bit of tap-dancing. If you're interested in doing this, please let me know and I can provide more detailed instructions.
By extension I'd also like to use different hotkeys for my vaults on these devices.
Could you explain a bit more about what you mean here?

To the question about hotkeys
I would like to set up cmd 1 to represent my personal vault on my laptop but represent my work vault on my desktop. Reinstalling the program and setting particular vaults to primary on particular devices will solve that issue. But if I'm going with that solution is there any way that I could disable the feature where unlocking the primary vault unlocks all other vaults? I would like to keep my 'primary' on my devices too just in case but I don't want it unlocked with my work password. Also as a personal preference I would like the shortcut/hotkey for my 'primary' to be cmd 0 or cmd 9. Is there any support for choosing your own shortcuts?
feature requests: - just to summarize
To set a default vault whose password you are queried every time you use 1password or 1password mini
The choice set vaults to unlock (or not) with other arbitrary vaults (rather than the primary unlocking all others)
To set (cmd n) shortcuts to unlock specific vaults

Hi @Mr.Anderson,
Thanks for your requests/suggestions!
...is there any way that I could disable the feature where unlocking the primary vault unlocks all other vaults?
No, I'm afraid there's currently no option to change that. Unlocking your Primary vault will also unlock all your secondary vaults for your convenience, so you only need to enter one master password to access all your data. However, if you'd like to unlock a secondary vault (while leaving the Primary vault locked) you can switch to it prior to unlocking by selecting 1Password > Switch to Vault. Or in 1Password mini, click the 1Password icon/image on the lock screen to select a secondary vault. (Alternately, remember that you can use the keyboard shortcuts to switch vaults.) When you unlock a secondary vault, it leaves your other vaults locked.
I would like to keep my 'primary' on my devices too just in case but I don't want it unlocked with my work password.
If you don't want the master password for your work vault to unlock your other vaults, you'll need to make sure the work vault is set up as a secondary vault, not the Primary. Unlocking a secondary vault will only unlock that vault, and leave the others locked.
Also as a personal preference I would like the shortcut/hotkey for my 'primary' to be cmd 0 or cmd 9. Is there any support for choosing your own shortcuts?
No, there's no setting to change the shortcuts to switch between your vaults.
To set a default vault whose password you are queried every time you use 1password or 1password mini
If you open 1Password or 1Password mini while it's locked, it will always ask for the master password for your Primary vault. The only way to change that would be to change which vault is the Primary. Otherwise, you'll need to switch to the vault you want to unlock, if you only want to unlock one secondary vault (this is much easier when using the keyboard shortcuts).
I can certainly let our developers know about your feature requests - I just can't make any promises. For now, if you'd like to change which vault is the Primary vault on a certain device, you can reset 1Password, then set it up again, making sure to choose the vault in Dropbox that you want to use as the Primary. If you'd really like to do that, just let us know and we'll be happy to explain what you would need to do.
