1 Password beta stopped recognizing my password Help!
While I was away on vacation I needed to log in to one of my sites. I tried to use 1 Password (beta version) and it did not recognize my password. Now I cannot access my passwords. I know I could start over but I would like to know what I could possibly do to fix this before I start trying some of the suggestions i.e. go back on the saved and see if that will get me back in. I don't want to make the situation worse and am a bit paranoid now
1Password Version: 5.4 BETA-26
Extension Version: Not Provided
OS Version: 10.10.4
Sync Type: Dropbox

I did not know if it was because I have missed about 7 updates while I was away. They do not seem to come to my iPad which is all I travel with

Hi @MeiLie,
I'm sorry 1Password isn't accepting your master password! To help us figure out why that's happening, can you please elaborate on a few things:
While I was away on vacation I needed to log in to one of my sites.
While you were on vacation, were you trying to use 1Password on the same Mac as usual, or a different computer/device where you haven't previously used 1Password? Since you mentioned this happened on vacation, I'm assuming it was working correctly before that, so it will help to know what was different (as far as your computer/1Password setup) when the problem started.
I tried to use 1 Password (beta version) and it did not recognize my password.
This also sounds like you installed 1Password on a different Mac (or other computer/device) than the one you used prior to your vacation. But I'm not sure that's what you were implying. If it was the same Mac as usual, but the master password suddenly stopped working, had you just installed a new beta version? Or was it the same version you had been using before the problem started?
If you installed 1Password on a new Mac, did it reject your master password when trying to initially sync your vault from Dropbox? Or was that already set up, and you were simply trying to unlock 1Password like normal? If you were trying to unlock it like normal, were you trying to unlock the main 1Password app, or the browser extension / 1Password mini?
I did not know if it was because I have missed about 7 updates while I was away.
You said you're using 5.4 BETA-26 on your Mac, which was released on July 24. It's a little older at this point as we've released several newer beta versions since then, but it should still work. Even if the beta expired, that wouldn't cause this problem - it would just tell you to download a newer version. If you're still using 5.4 BETA-26, you should update to the latest (which is currently 5.4.BETA-34).
They do not seem to come to my iPad which is all I travel with
I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Are you also having trouble with 1Password on your iPad? What version of 1Password for iOS do you currently have installed?
Thanks!

I have 1Password on my iMac. when I travel, I use my iPad. Everything was working when I left on my vacation though I cannot say exactly when I used it before I left. After I was away for about 2 weeks, I tried to access a site that I needed 1 Password for. It was then I discovered that the password did not work. I had been using 1 Password on my iMac for quite a few years so, I have not changed anything (as far as I know) though I was very busy before I left and some times I go to check things from emails that come in i.e. if I had gotten an email that said there is a new version out (not beta) I might have gone to look at it. I do not know if I could have messed things up by having a beta and an original version, though I have had no problems prior. The other thing is that I had encrypted my computer at the request of the university where I was consulting using the Mac encryption. I do not know if any or all of these things contribute. But I will update now to the latest beta. I meant that I did not get those pop-ups on my iPad that I get on my computer that say there is a new version. I believe I have 1Password 5

Hi @MeiLie,
Thanks for clarifying! I see what you mean now. Your master password should still work (assuming you haven't changed it, and it doesn't sound like you did). Using a slightly old beta version wouldn't have anything to do with that (although it's probably a good idea to update to the latest beta if you haven't already done so). However, you mentioned something which might be a clue:
I do not know if I could have messed things up by having a beta and an original version
Do you currently have multiple 1Password apps on your Mac? If so, what is the version of the "original" copy of 1Password? That might explain the problem - for example, if you also have the Mac App Store version installed, that stores its data separately from the AgileBits Store version (beta or stable), and therefore can have a different master password.
You also said you noticed the problem when you tried to use the 1Password extension to sign into a website. Have you tried opening the main 1Password app and unlocking that? Please open the Applications folder, then double-click on the 1Password app and see if you can unlock it that way. While you're looking in Applications, check to see if there are two different 1Password apps there - if so, try each to see if one accepts your master password.
The other thing is that I had encrypted my computer at the request of the university where I was consulting using the Mac encryption. I do not know if any or all of these things contribute.
Are you referring to the built-in FireVault feature on Mac OS X? If so, that shouldn't cause any problem at all for 1Password. If you meant something else, can you let us know what?
I meant that I did not get those pop-ups on my iPad that I get on my computer that say there is a new version. I believe I have 1Password 5
The Mac and iOS versions of 1Password are completely separate apps with different development cycles. Updates for each one are not usually released at the same time. Also, beta versions are released much more often than regular, stable updates - so assuming you're using the stable release version of 1Password 5 for iOS, you won't see updates nearly as often as you do for the Mac beta. Sorry for any confusion about that!
By the way, you can follow the steps in this knowledgebase article to find your version of 1Password for iOS. If I understand the situation, you're still able to unlock 1Password on your iPad, right?

On my computer I have 1Password 5 and the keychain in Dropbox. All there previous versions are on an external backup I have an SSD on my computer so the data is all on an external drive. The encryption is FileVault/ No, I could not unlock it on my iPad. That is where I discovered the problem

All there previous versions are on an external backup
Is that backup drive permanently attached to your Mac? If so, try temporarily ejecting it and see if that solves the problem after a reboot. (If it does someone will tell you how to deal with the problem without having to detach the backup drive.)

No, that did not solve the problem I did make sure that I did all the updates on the iMac, iPhone and iPad.

Hi @MeiLie,
Thanks for trying that. So to make sure I understand, your master password suddenly stopped working on your iPad, and then the next time you tried to unlock 1Password on your Mac, the master password wouldn't work there either?
I don't know what would have caused it to suddenly stop working on both Mac and iOS, but just in case you haven't seen it yet, this knowledgebase article has some tips that might help you: My Master Password is not being accepted. What should I do?
If the simpler tips there don't help (caps lock, typing the master password somewhere else and copying it to 1Password, etc) then restoring from a backup on your Mac (which is actually described first) will hopefully get things sorted out for you. Please let us know how it goes!

I had tried many of the tips before coming to the support page. I have no idea either what could have caused this except for electrical storms. But thank you for trying. If, which now seems most likely that I will have to start over, How do I easily create a new 1Password, say using the regular rather than the beta. Is it easy for me to switch back or is it just as reasonable to keep using the beta. I did like the tips for creating a new master password since mine had been quite simple. It was also good to know that Dropbox is still quite safe to use but I did not see whether it would be safer vs iCloud or are they about the same. I guess I should have printed out at least the important passwords. I know I can reset which is also good but a drag. I at least can chose from the cs file which sites I want to find the passwords for first.

Hi @MeiLie,
Both the beta version and the stable version available from our AgileBits Download page access the same support files and vault(s) so you can switch between them if you have need. While we benefit from beta testers, unless you enjoy beta testing and helping improve the software through detailed bug reports you're better off with the stable version simply for peace of mind.
As for starting over, if you've sadly concluded there is no recovery of your vault then we do have a guide that will help which you can find at How do I start over with an empty vault?
Before you do though, can I just check to see if you've investigated restoring a 1Password backup file at all? The Backup tab in 1Password is completely accessible even when locked so you could click the Backup Now button to create a new backup and then test old ones to see if any of them allow you to regain access. If you're at the stage of starting over then there's no harm in trying.
As far as security comparisons between Dropbox and iCloud go, I'm not aware of any published material that would suggest one is weaker than the other and as always, your best security comes from a strong Master Password as the ultimate last line of defence. The way I look at it is some very informed and intelligent people here in AgileBits trust Dropbox and if they do I feel I can too.
If you have any follow up questions at all please do ask

Just in case it has any bearing, every time I have rebooted or closed my browser, I have been thrown out of most programs and have to sign in again even with this one where I have said keep me signed in. At first I thought that I had been wrong but now it has happened every time I try some one of the things that have been suggested. Most of the sites if I remember the password will let me sign in but of the others that I forgot and had to request new password.

Hi @MeiLie,
Thanks for the additional info! However, if you're being logged out of websites when you're supposed to stay logged in, that doesn't really have anything to do with 1Password. That's something controlled by the website as well as the browser you're using (for example, the website may need to store cookies in your browser in order to keep you signed in). 1Password is able to fill a login form on a website and submit it, but whether or not you remain logged in is up to the website and browser.
It sounds like you've begun the process of resetting some passwords and saving new Login items in 1Password. Hopefully that all goes well, and although it will take some extra work right now, you shouldn't need to do so again in the future. But if you do have more questions or need help with anything else, please let us know! :)
