Hello @kimyoshluntz,
Sadly I cannot find anything that indicates you can gift an application purchase in the Mac App Store like you can gift iOS apps in iTunes. It would seem the buck stops with Apple here. I can think of two possible routes that would allow you to make such a wonderful gift to this person.
- Apple Gift Card. You can gift somebody the money although they would have to purchase the application. While it says iTunes Gift Card it works in the Mac App Store and it seems you can gift them the exact amount using the other option rather than a preset value. It lacks a bit of the gift giving sentiment but it would allow them to purchase the Mac App Store version of 1Password for Mac which allows syncing via iCloud Drive.
- You have the option of purchasing 1Password for Mac as a gift for somebody else in our own store too, a bit like what you expected the Mac App Store to be able to do. You make the purchase but supply their email address and any message you want to add. The only difference between the AgileBits Store and Mac App Store version is the ability to sync your vault (primary only) to iCloud Drive while both versions allow syncing via Dropbox or Wi-Fi Sync as well (between a Mac and iOS devices).
Does that help at all? If you have any further questions please do ask

You can gift both via iTunes on the Mac and the App Store on your iDevice, but not via the Mac App Store for a Mac App.

App Store on an iDevice:
Here's an article on how to essentially gift a Mac App.

Thanks all. Super weird difference between iOS and OS X.
I did find that after a free download of the app on OS X, then purchasing from inside the app, I was able to provide my own credit card to purchase for my Mom. I purchased a Mac and Windows bundle for the new PC I bought for my step-Dad. I am planning to do a FaceTime tutorial for 1Password; need to get on my poker face.
Again thanks all.

Hello @kimyoshluntz,
I'm glad you managed to find a route that works for you and it has to be said, it sounds like you're a fan of 1Password :chuffed: Fingers crossed your mum and step-dad find it as useful as you have
If you have any other questions at all please don't hesitate to ask.
