Pause synchronization

Hi,
I sync my vault with an folder on a network hard drive at home. If I start 1P being at a friends WLAN or somewhere else I get always the notification that there is an Sync error with the option Repair oder Ignor. Would it be possible to have a third option to pause the sync if I'm not in my Home WLAN? Thanks!

    Hi @Rici,

    Thanks for your suggestion!

Although I can certainly forward that request to our developers, I also wanted to explain that we don't recommend using Folder sync to point directly to a network drive. This is because of problems that can happen (as you've noticed) if that network drive is unavailable, or if 1Password encounters network issues when trying to read/write to a sync folder. My understanding is that there's no Apple API to notify 1Password when a network drive is no longer available like there is for removable (USB) drives.

The best way to use a network drive to sync your 1Password data is to configure Folder sync to point to a local folder on your Mac, and then use a tool such as rsync (or another file copy tool) to copy the contents of the folder to/from the network drive. You can find some more information about that in our Folder sync guide. When you set it up this way, 1Password will always be able to sync to/from the sync file on your Mac so it won't give you errors.

Hopefully this helps! If you have questions about that, please let us know. :)

    Hi Drew,

thanks for this info, I missed the folder sync guide before.

I tried now ChronoSync but a sync takes several minutes for one vaults, it does not convince me at all and I would prefer another 1P behavior. If 1P detects a sync problem (because not in the Home LAN) it deletes the path to the sync folder immediately and notify me with the option to ignore or repair the path. Like I wrote before, if 1P would delete the path only if I press ignore but leave the chance just to pause the sync (without deleting the path) would be great! Thanks.

@Rici: It's certainly something we can consider in the future if we change the way 1Password works entirely, but for now 1Password writes directly to the filesystem, so if the location you set is not available for whatever reason, 1Password simply cannot write the data like you asked it to do. Thanks for letting us know your setup, as we may be able to take different uses into consideration in future versions. Cheers! :)
