Convert category of an item.

Is there a way to convert the category of one item to another?
I've got a bunch of items that were "converted to logins" when they really should have been converted to server accounts. And while it's easy to convert an unsaved password to a login account I don't see a way of converting a login to a server account.

It looks like a lot of people are asking for this.
https://discussions.agilebits.com/discussion/16371/move-between-categories
11 people wanting it.
https://discussions.agilebits.com/discussion/12366/convert-an-item-from-one-category-to-another
4 people wanting it.

That was back in 2013. Is there a way now?

Thanks.

    There still is not a way to move a record from one category to another. You can ease the pain of copying and pasting a little by using mini. Click on the lock icon in the menu bar, select the record you want to work from, and click the anchor icon at the bottom left. That will anchor the record to the desktop so that you can then open the main application, create a new record in your preferred category, and then copy and paste the information from the anchored display to the new record.

    Just moving an entire record from one category to another isn't just a trivial operation, since each category type has such different fields. Deciding how to map the moved record to the new suite of fields doesn't seem simple. I'm not a developer though, so perhaps it's simpler than I imagine.

    @danshumaker ,

    How many of these records do you have that you want converted from Login to Server? If the asnwer is "many", and you'd be willing to use a converter option to do it, lets discuss your requirements.

    @hawkmoth -- Thanks but no thanks . That's about ten clicks per account. I've got about 10-15 that need converting so ... 100 clicks. Yuk! p.s. I am a developer - It's not hard to do the mapping. You've heard the saying - Just do it. Often times bosses don't want excuses. I'm fine if the mappings are not perfect - if the auto-mapping / best guess of some AgileBits developer would save me 7 out of 10 clicks then that's totally acceptable. I'm fine making a couples fixes afterwords. I appreciate your detailed response and time you took.

    @MrC - Solutions, I like it. Let's talk. I hope you're not talking export/import to csv. But anything is better than manual repetitive mind numbing clicks. One concern I have is not just for old accounts but new ones. My work flow is usually - create account on server, have 1 password "record" it as generic account then if I have time go back and convert it to the proper type. Unfortunately I havn't had time to go back and convert some ,, hence the backlog. thx

    @danshumaker ,

    No CSV importing. I've had in the back of my little mind a category converter as part of my converter utility. I recently added support for reading 1PIFs (to allow 1Password database print outs), so part of the job is done. The challenge in creating a category converter has always been how to allow users to configure the category and field mappings. Since you have very specific needs right now, I could take the semi-lazy approach and create a means for you to do your conversion.

    Obviously this is not an automatic solution, nor as easy as drag and drop, but could save you those 100 clicks. The process would be that you export the desired entries to 1PIF, run the conversion (possibly customized), import the resulting 1PIF, and delete your old records when you're happy with the converted result.

    If you are interested in this route, I'd need you to provide me a list of the category and field mapping(s) you need. Some things are probably obvious. Any fields not mapped will either go into the Notes section as Field: Value pairs, or I could create custom sections / fields (and you'd need to describe what you want).

    I'll create a fallback mechanism that will map an unsupported category into another category by placing the fields / values as as Field: Value pairs in the Notes section of the target category (e.g. a user wants to map a Membership into a Secure Note, but no such mapping was configured yet).

    Hi @danshumaker,

    Thanks for contacting us about this! As you've already seen, we get a lot of requests for this, and I'll gladly add your feedback to our internal tracker. I know it sounds like it would be easy to "just do it" and map fields from one item to another, but it's actually a lot more complex than that. That's not to say it can't be done, but it would mean huge changes to the way Categories work, and would require a great amount of effort and coordination to ensure compatibility between different versions and platforms. We're a small team, and I imagine it's very difficult to justify the time and resources it would take to implement a feature that most people would only ever need to use the first time they start using 1Password, when switching over from a different app. We'd love to add the ability to change the category of an item, but it really is an "easier said than done" type of situation. It's not something that can be done overnight.

    Hawkmoth's suggestion (which is also described in this blog post) doesn't necessarily have to take that many clicks, as keyboard shortcuts can take care of most of those actions. But I totally get what you're saying - it's just not that convenient to have to copy/paste each field from one item to another! I agree. And even if you did that for your 10-15 items that belong in a different category, it sounds like you might have a need to do this on a regular basis. In that case, I think a converter from MrC might be a better solution for you (although I think it's still going to be more steps than what you'd prefer). I'll let him fill you in on more details, he's extremely helpful and is usually able to reply fairly quickly.

    I've commented on this before, but will do so again.

    I think AgileBits could take this 80% of the way very quickly by starting with a conversion feature that simple copies all the fields into the Notes section of a new entry as Field: Value pairs. This will place all the relevant data into a new entry, where a User can then just put the values into the proper fields, and leave those that don't naturally map in the Notes section (or create new fields at their leisure). This gives users a simple category conversion tool, and saves them dozens of copy / pastes. Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good (enough).

    Thanks @MrC and @Drew_AG . I would be stoked to have all the fields from the old login lumped into the Notes field of the new item as long as the new item is in the right category. I think @Drew_AG and the agile crew might just be overthinking it. Instead of worrying about direct field equivalence and/or mapping just think of a copy/paste assistant feature. I found that because of the awesome sleekness of 1Password's gui design it doesn't take up much screen space. Which is good except in this case where I really want two accounts visible side by side so as to ease the copy paste tasks. .. After trying the anchor thing that Hawk mentioned I think I'll stick with that.. it works better than I thought and is only a few more clicks. Thanks again.

    Hi @danshumaker,

    Thanks again for your input on this. We'll see what we can do to ease this process in a future release. Meanwhile, I'm glad hawkmoth's suggestion of anchoring items from the Mini was helpful to you.

    Let us know if there's anything else we can help you with, and thanks for using 1Password!
