Feature Request: Security Question Answers
While I realize I could keep these in a secure note or even with the main login information for a site, it would be very handy if 1Password had a feature similar to but separate from the logins widget where it will remember the answers to my security questions ("What was the name of your first pet", etc.). The fact that these often are asked on forms without other login information and often at a dedicated page other than the login form itself would seem to necessitate something different than a 1Password login widget. Maybe I'm over thinking it...

Hi @sstringer,
I'm sure hoping you do not have the same answers across your different logins!
These really do belong in the entry for a specific site (or bank, or whatever), since they should be treated like passwords and available to you when you need them.
You might want to create an extra section w/Q & A fields, such as this:
Then, you can set the answer fields to be of type Password, so they can be concealed:
Some people label the Q fields with the actual question, thereby reducing the length of the field list (at the expense of widening the entry). Your choice.

Agreed that that is one way to save these, certainly, but it still requires that you open 1Password and open the login to reveal the answers. What I'm suggesting is a password-login-like functionality in 1Password that recognizes the question and fills in my saved answer just like 1Pa does with usernames and passwords. To my knowledge, there's no way to do this intuitively within the program currently.

Think about how difficult that would be to program, since which of several questions you will be asked will be different and random each time you login to a site.

You're correct, and that's at least because there isn't an obvious way to deal with it from a developer's viewpoint. (That last sentence is based on what I've read about this elsewhere in the forum when this had come up before, not based on any personal knowledge of what is and isn't hard to program.)

Hi @sstringer,
Websites use security questions & answers in very different ways, and as Hawkmoth mentioned, it's very difficult to program 1Password to be able to fill security answers as seamlessly as usernames and passwords (and even those can be pretty tricky on some sites). But depending on how it works on certain sites, you might be able to create a separate Login item for each security question.
For example, if the login process of a certain site includes a dedicated page that asks you to answer one of your security questions, you can try manually saving a new Login item for that page by following these steps:
- On the page that asks a security question, enter your answer, but do not submit the form.
- Click the 1Password extension/mini icon in the browser or menu bar.
- Click the 'gear' icon (to the right of the Search field), then select Save new Login from the menu that pops up.
- Edit the title to identify the site & question (for example, "American Express, Security Question #2").
- Click the Save button.
If you're able to save a new Login that way, the next time you sign into that site and are asked the same question, try selecting that Login item from the 1Password extension/mini. It might work, but like I said, this works differently on each site, so it might not work as expected.
I used to try this with some sites in the past. However, it takes a bit of extra work to do that, it doesn't work on all sites, and the websites I visit rarely (if ever) ask me to answer the security questions anyway. So these days, I just use custom fields in my Login items to store that information - like in MrC's screenshots. When I do need to answer a security question, I simply click on the appropriate custom field in the Login item to copy the answer, then paste it into the site. You can certainly try experimenting with that to see which way works best for you.
If you have more questions about that, just let us know! :)
