Usability, Facebook and 1P mini

Hi again-

I have now installed 1P, the browser extensions and Dropbox (I am using Dropbox sync) on both of my connected Macs. Also 1P and Dropbox on my iPhone 6+. However, although I have read the user guide and searched the forum, I am still having problems.

For example. I just tried to access my logins by clicking on the Safari 1P icon, but was told that 1P is not installed. Also, when I tried to save and access my logins on my phone, e.g. for Facebook, I was not able to do so.

I guess I don't yet understand how to properly harness the potential power of 1P and can not find my answers in the user guide or other forum posts. What now?

Thanks.

Jeff

Also, "When confronted with a login page, press ⌘\ to automatically fill your saved login. If you have multiple logins saved for the current site, 1Password will ask you which one to fill." This does not work for me.

  • Greetings @jeff_feinman,

So the first goal is to make sure the extension can communicate with 1Password mini as without it features like the keyboard shortcut ⌘\ won't work either. So we have a better insight into your system could you detail a bit more for us please. The following could be important.

    1. Which version of 1Password are you running?
    2. What version of Safari are you running?
    3. Which version of the 1Password extension is installed?
    4. Do you have any third party anti-virus or firewalls on your Mac? The extension communicates with 1Password mini over something called WebSockets. It's the same route any application needing to communicate a server essentially uses except in our case the communication is only local to your Mac. It does mean though that a firewall can interfere. This page may help, Configuring a firewall or proxy on your Mac.

I believe that once we get the extension working a lot of 1Password might make more sense  Once we hear back from you we'll continue working with you to get it resolved

1-Just downloaded 5.3.2 from your web store

    2-8.0.6

3-where do I get that info?

4-No. (Sophos is present but turned off).

    Thanks.

    Hi @jeff_feinman,

    Thanks for the info!

3-where do I get that info?

Just click the link from that question in littlebobbytables' message, and that will take you to the steps to find the extension version:

The latest stable version of the extension is currently 4.4.3. If that's what you have installed in Safari, that's fine. If nothing else (like Sophos) is blocking the communication between the extension and 1Password mini, please open the main 1Password app and go to the menu for 1Password > Preferences. Select the General tab, and make sure there's a check mark next to the option for Always keep 1Password mini running. 1Password mini is the 1Password icon that you should see in your Mac's menu bar (it looks just like the 1Password extension icon in Safari). It needs to be running in order for the extension to work.

If mini is already enabled and nothing seems to be blocking the communication, try simply rebooting your Mac. After it restarts, open Safari and see if the 1Password extension works. Is there any difference this time?

I am indeed running 4.4.3. No Sophos processes are running. 1 P mini is running.

Not sure what to do now.

    Interesting. It's working this am.

The only difference is that the 1P main app is also open. Does it always need to be running for the keyboard shortcut to work?

    Hi @jeff_feinman,

I'm glad it's working when the main 1Password app is open - that means we're getting closer to solving this! :)

You shouldn't need to have the main 1Password app open in order for the extension to work - you just need to make sure 1Password mini is running (look for its icon in the menu bar of your Mac). That's why I had you check the "Always keep 1Password Mini running" option in the 1Password preferences. If that option was disabled, that would explain why the extension didn't work while the main app was closed (opening the main 1Password app also launches 1Password mini). Does the extension still work if you close the main 1Password app?
