Updating an entry in both Vaults

When we copy (not move) an item to a secondary vault, and then later on we update either entry, does it update the other vault (i.e. both entries in both vaults) too?

No, sorry, updates between vaults do not currently happen automatically. (I don't know if they ever will: I'm merely a volunteer here on the forums. :) )

@dozza: Indeed, separate vaults are separate for a reason: it is often important to have discreet data kept in discrete places! But we can certainly consider making it possible to synchronize data between separate vaults in the future.

I'd love to hear the particular use for this, as my inclination would be to keep an item in one vault or another, depending on who I need to share it with (someone, or no one), and of course any vault I have access to...well, I have access to all of the items inside it, so I haven't felt a need to keep the same thing in two places. Let me know! :)

    OK Brenty

My scenario for this relates to another thread here.

We have created an additional vault for each of our children so that they can sync to their own vaults now on their devices and not see all our sensitive data. I populated their vaults by copying over entries from our primary vault (Mum & Dads). So I was interested to know what happens to the copy entry in our Primary vault if they update/edit an entry in their 'child' vaults.

As they can't appear to both update, as they are in separate vaults, there is little point me keeping a copy in our Primary vault as it will most likely become incorrect in time. I was only keeping a copy in the Primary vault in the event that they mislaid their devices. But I suppose that's overkill as I can always look them up on our Parent devices & iMac, which lists all vaults.

    Hi @dozza,

Thanks so much for sharing your use case - that's really helpful! At this time, I would recommend keeping your items in only one vault, just to ensure that one of the copies doesn't become out-dated when the other is updated. If you would like to keep the items in both the primary vaults and your children's vaults, you might think about including a tag on these items to indicate that you'll need to monitor them and possibly update them manually from time to time as changes are made.

We are looking into ways to make 1Password's multiple vaults feature even more powerful and user-friendly, and feedback from users like you really helps to guide that process. High on our list is making it simple to access all of the data in all of your vaults to negate the need for having your item in multiple places. Currently, we have keyboard shortcuts in place to make it easy to switch between vaults. Simply use ⌘# ( Command-'vault number' ) when the main app (or mini) is active to switch between your vaults.

I was only keeping a copy in the Primary vault in the event that they mislaid their devices.

If you have the children's vaults synced to your own computers and devices, and stored in Dropbox, you already have a couple of backup mechanisms in place in case they misplace their devices, but there's nothing at all wrong with being cautious when you're dealing with your important password data!

I hope this helps, but we're here if you have any further questions. :)
