New Install Recognizing Previous Installation

I tried the free version of 1P on my iPhone and wanted to put it on my Mac. I downloaded it from the app store and it seems that it has recognized a previous installation. The app is asking for my password, but I have no idea what it was and don't recall installing a previous version. I was hoping to just add the login info from my free version on my phone and carry on... It now seems that I'm locked out of the app on my Mac and can't do anything with it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hey @Peterhanebury!

It sounds like you might have switched on iCloud syncing on your iPhone and your 1Password data has synced across to your Mac.

Can I ask, are you still using 1Password on your iPhone? If so is the data any good, or can we delete it all and start over?

Thanks for the reply Greig. What you have suggested is likely accurate. I have only just begun to use 1Password on my phone and would be fine with deleting this and starting over.

    Hi @Peterhanebury,

If your Mac is finding your data in iCloud, it should be asking you for the same master password you use to unlock 1Password on your iPhone. Have you tried entering that?

If the same master password doesn't work, my guess is that you had previously used 1Password on your Mac at some point, and it's finding that old data now. That would require whatever master password you had set up at the time. If you don't remember (and assuming that's what is happening), you'll need to reset 1Password on your Mac so you can start over (and sync the data you've already entered in 1Password on your iPhone). To do that, follow the steps here: How do I start over with an empty vault?

If you're not sure what version of 1Password you installed on your Mac in the past, when you follow the steps to start over, you should follow the steps in the sections for both the Mac App Store version and the AgileBits Store version.

After those steps, when you open 1Password 5 on your Mac again, it should be like the first time you ever used it. If you've enabled one of the sync options in 1Password on your iPhone, you'll be able to sync that to 1Password on your Mac during the setup. We have more information here: Using existing 1Password data on a new computer

Does that help? Let us know how it goes, and if you have more questions or something doesn't work quite right, we'll continue from there. Thanks! :)

Thank you Drew. What you suggested worked perfectly ! The only issue I'm having now it that I'm trying to sync using iCloud, but 1Password recognizes that I have saved information there previously and is insisting that I sync the data, but of course I don't have the password to sync it....

  • Hi @Peterhanebury,

If you're quite happy that this data in iCloud is old and simply getting in your way then we can easily help you there  The menu option Help > Troubleshooting > Reset iCloud Data will safely remove the old sync container and allow you to create a brand new one when you enable iCloud Sync.

I'm confident that should resolve the issue for you so please do let us know if it doesn't (and if it does too, it's always nice to know things are working as they should).

Excellent ! Thanks so much. That worked perfectly

  • That's great to hear @Peterhanebury it sounds like everything is working properly again and long may it stay that way  If it does't or if you simply have questions about 1Password though you know where to find us
