1Password on USB memory stick for emergencies

Hi,

I am wandering if you have found a solution for saving the Vault on a flash drive and the ability to open it with any web browser.
It used to work in the past but then it stopped working.

For example creating a "Live Operating System" with a secure web browser and 1Password installed?

Smiles across the wires,

Rogier

    Hello @MacExpert,

I don't see a viable way of circumnavigating the issue from our side. We use JavaScript to decrypt your data as well as handle all of the dynamic aspects in 1PasswordAnywhere. The reason it doesn't work now is most browsers are disabling JavaScript when loaded locally for security reasons. It is possible to disable this restriction in Safari and Chrome and we detail both of these on the page Local file restrictions in 1PasswordAnywhere. Sadly it doesn't look good for Firefox unless something has changed recently.

Your idea is interesting but I don't think we have the time right now to ensure it was put together properly. Now there isn't anything stopping somebody doing a custom one for themselves. Something like TechTool's Protogo would achieve what you're looking for I believe although that might be a bit expensive. There are likely alternatives that achieve the same result though.

It would seem the best option might be Safari and disabling the local file restrictions, what do you think?

    OK I have found a solution :-)

I used Techtool Pro 8 and put TechtoolPro To Go on a USB (3.0) memory stick. During the configuration you can add additional apps and assign storage space.

    I installed:

    • 1Password
    • TextEdit
    • Preview
    • Chrome

Tested by booting from an other Macbook. Somehow 1Password wasn't immediately visible. But when I opened it from the App store it became available. Then I used a 2nd memory stick to copy the 1Password database to the documents folder of the user on the ToGo drive. Opened and tested 1Password. Installed the browser plugin and tested the configuration with success.

Confirmed a stable setup by rebooting multiple times.

The only drawback is that one can only boot from a Mac by inserting the USB flash drive and holding down the Option key during the booth process. Choose the Minimal setup and you care (slowly) on the go.

    Hope this helps,

    Rogier

  • Hello @MacExpert,

It's certainly one way to go and it comes with the added reassurance that you trust this copy of OS X. For times when you don't have opportunity to boot off of a pen drive though the reconfiguring Safari might be quicker and easier. I'm glad you get a working setup though.
