auto-entry on Mac and touch id on iphone 6+
I'm a new user. Two quick questions.
1-1P only asks to save passwords if I have previously entered my master password. Is there any way for it to ask me to save then enter my master (for situations where I have not used 1P that day)?
2-Each time that I try to add or access a password from my Dropbox-synced vault on my iPhone, I am asked for my master password. I have theoretically enabled touch id in settings, but it doesn't seem to be working. Also, should I need to enter my master password every time I log in to a new site on the phone even if I just entered it 1 minute earlier?
Thanks.
Jeff

Hi @jeff_feinman,
I'm sorry you're having a bit of trouble with 1Password on your Mac and iPhone!

1Password should ask you to save new logins even if it's locked, so it sounds like there might be a problem. It might actually be related to the 1Password extension/mini issue you were having in your previous discussion here. The last thing you mentioned in that thread was that the extension started to work when you used the
⌘\
keyboard shortcut, but only if the main 1Password app was open. Is that still the case?If so, that problem and this one could both happen if 1Password mini isn't running, or if something is blocking the communication between 1Password mini and the 1Password browser extension. I asked you to check this in the other thread, but would you mind double-checking on this setting:
- Open the main 1Password app and go to the menu for 1Password 5 > Preferences.
- Click the General tab.
- Make sure the option for "Always keep 1Password Mini running" is enabled.
If that option was disabled, it would most likely explain the problems you've been describing with 1Password on your Mac. If that option is enabled (i.e. has a check mark next to it), try quitting 1Password. Do you still see the 1Password mini icon in your Mac's menu bar at the very top of the screen?
2-Each time that I try to add or access a password from my Dropbox-synced vault on my iPhone, I am asked for my master password. I have theoretically enabled touch id in settings, but it doesn't seem to be working. Also, should I need to enter my master password every time I log in to a new site on the phone even if I just entered it 1 minute earlier?
If I understand, it sounds like this is happening when you use the 1Password extension from Safari on your iPhone. Is that correct? If so, please open the main 1Password app on your iPhone - does it ask you to unlock it with your master password, or with Touch ID?
If the 1Password extension in Safari is asking you to enter your master password every single time you use it, please open the main 1Password app and go to Settings > Security. Is the Touch ID setting enabled (blue) or disabled (white/gray)? You'll need to make sure the Touch ID option is enabled, otherwise you'll be asked for your master password each time you open the extension in Safari.
Let us know how it all goes, thanks!

Thanks for your reply Drew. My replies= yes and yes.
1P mini is running and touch ID is enabled. Unfortunately, both problems are sporadic, e.g at time 1P asks for to save a login whereas other times it does not. I'd say that it was site specific, but that is not always the case either. For example, I just logged in to my siteground.com account, and was not prompted by 1P. But I was prompted to save the login once I entered my master pass in mini.
Also, sometimes I am presented with the Touch ID prompt on my iphone 6+, but not at other times. Does it always require me to enter the master pass after the phone is re-started?
Lastly, One of my biggest problems is remembering email logins. It is easy to add web logins, but how do I add email passwords or other secure notes?
Thanks. Sorry for all of my learning curve questions. I actually have read your documentation and some other knowledgebase articles, and am slowly getting my answers. I appreciate your patience.

Hello @jeff_feinman,
I'll start with the easy one. You are correct with your understand of Touch ID, 1Password will require your Master Password after a reboot. We did have a bug where if you more routinely accessed your vault from the iOS Extension and didn't use the actual iOS app it would repeatedly ask for your Master Password as timers, how long before your vault should lock, wouldn't seem to be observed. I've just tested 1Password 6 for iOS and you should only need to enter your Master Password once regardless of if it's in the iOS app or the extension. Of course this can still be affected depending on certain security settings but the defaults should mean it's only once per reboot.
Now regarding 1Password for Mac.
Something quirky might be going on. You've said Always keep 1Password mini running and yet a lot of what you describe could be explain by 1Password mini not running.
- When the main 1Password window is open do you see the following icon in your menu bar?
- Do you still see that icon when you close the 1Password window?
- With the main 1Password window closed, and ignoring your browser for the moment, does
⌥⌘\
open 1Password mini? The menu should open irrespective of the application in focus as long as 1Password mini is running.
Lastly (I think I've covered the key areas) your query about Secure Notes and Email Account items.
Both can be created from the main 1Password window using the File > New Item menu option. Now when it comes to email login credentials here's what I wrote for somebody else a couple of days ago.
When I first stumbled on the Email category (I started off as just a mere user) I moved all of my email addresses over thinking this was great. Then I eventually realised it did mean one significant drawback - webmail interfaces didn't have the right item to work with. What I now do is I keep an Email Account item for email addresses that I use exclusively via a proper email client or I keep a generic Email item for addresses that I use in both a browser and an email client. For example gmail. I keep a gmail Email Account item that stores the IMAP addresses and port numbers but each actual email address and password is stored as a Login item to allow webmail.
Does that help with the Email Account and how to create Secure Notes or am I misunderstanding the query?

1.-Yes
2-Yes
3-No (assuming I'm correct that this=shift-command-backslash (). In Safari this opens the add a new tab window, and in other apps it has no effect.
Yes, thanks. I added my first email account client note.

Hi @jeff_feinman,
3-No (assuming I'm correct that this=shift-command-backslash (). In Safari this opens the add a new tab window, and in other apps it has no effect.
Sorry for the confusion there!
⌥⌘\
is actually Option+Command+Backslash. Can you please try that again, making sure you quit the main 1Password app first? (And preferably from a non-browser app.) Thanks!0 -
Yup, that worked!
Unfortunately tho I am still not prompted by 1P unless it is already open.
Also, how do I add emails and secure notes if the main app is not open? I see the option to add 1, but then what?
Thanks again for your awesome support!

Hello @jeff_feinman,
For categories like Email Accounts or Secure Notes you will need the main 1Password window open. The way I treat the two components is 1Password mini is for retrieving information e.g. filling a website's login page or filling a credit card while the main 1Password window is how I enter anything that isn't a Login item. You can even create Login items from within the main page but if you let the extension create them instead then 1Password gets to learn what the page you want to fill looks like and what information needs to go where. It might be I'm misunderstanding so please do correct me if I'm not answering your actual question.
The 1Password Save Login from the locked state is still a puzzle at the moment, I haven't quite figured out why you're not being asked when you should.

OK, thanks.
Another issue arose tonight which I find puzzling.
I used 1Pasword to generate a new login for a site, yet it did not replace the old one (and therefore was not able to auto-enter it).
What is the correct way to use the password generator?

Hi @jeff_feinman,
I'm sorry you ran into some trouble using the password generator to update a Login password!
When you change a password from your account settings on a website (regardless of whether you use the password generator), 1Password should normally prompt you to update your Login item for that site when you submit the form. But if that doesn't happen as expected, that new password isn't lost. When you click the Fill (or Copy) button in the Password Generator in 1Password mini, that creates a new Password item in 1Password. This serves as a safety net for situations just like the one you described. Simply open the main 1Password app, click on the Passwords category on the left sidebar, and you should have a new item for the new password you generated (you can sort the list by Date Created if it helps). From there, you can copy/paste the new password into your Login item for that site. We have more information here: How can I recover an unsaved password?
Now, the fact that you weren't prompted by 1Password to update your Login item with the new password is likely due to a bug in the current version of the 1Password extension. I'm very sorry for the inconvenience! Fortunately, that bug has been fixed in the latest 1Password extension beta, and that fix should be included in the next regular update for the extension. I don't have a timeframe for that, but in the meantime, if you'd like to install the beta extension, just follow these steps:
- Open the following link in your browser: https://agilebits.com/onepassword/extensions
- Click the link for Enable betas (underneath the Install button)
- Click the big green Install button and follow any additional steps
If you don't want to install the beta extension, there's another workaround: Instead of clicking the Fill button in the password generator, you can highlight the generated password and then copy & paste it into the change password form. When you submit that form, 1Password should prompt you to update the Login item.
Again, I'm sorry for the inconvenience and confusion about all this! Hopefully this helps to explain what happened.
