Mac App Store and AgileBits Store versions of 1Password - Which should I delete?

Hi, In trying to sort out a problem with sync across my various devices (which I think I may have almost sorted), I noticed that the version of 1Password on one of my macs is from the AppStore (v5.3), and the other from the web store (v5.3.2). The last licence I have directly from you is for v3! So I'm not sure how come I have a running version of 5.3.2 on my laptop. Would the wise thing to do be to delete that version and reinstall on that machine from the App Store?
thanks

    Hi @davidestevenssound,

Sorry for any confusion about licenses and different versions of 1Password! The main difference between the Mac App Store and AgileBits Store versions of 1Password 5 for Mac is that only the Mac App Store version has the iCloud sync option - but since you're using Dropbox sync, that's not a problem for you. So the main thing to figure out here is the license situation.

I found your old license for 1Password 3 for Mac in our system (since you purchased that from the AgileBits Store), and it sounds like you purchased 1Password 5 for Mac (or version 4) from the Mac App Store at some point, since you have that installed on one Mac. On your other Mac, you must have downloaded the AgileBits Store version of 1Password 5 from our download site - it's a free download, although it would be in trial mode without a license.

So, there are actually a couple different options: One is that you can download the Mac App Store version of 1Password 5 on the Mac that currently has the AgileBits Store version installed (as long as you're signed into the Mac App Store with the same Apple ID you used to make the purchase, you'll be able to download it for free from the Purchases section). If you haven't previously installed the Mac App Store version on that Mac, it will find your data in the AgileBits Store version the first time you open it, so it's very easy to switch. We have more information about that here: Switching to the version of 1Password from the Mac App Store

The other option is that you can continue to use the AgileBits Store version, and there's a way to activate it with the Mac App Store: Just install and open the Mac App Store version, then quit that and open the AgileBits Store version again - it should see you've installed the Mac App Store version and automatically activate itself. To check that in the AgileBits Store version, go to the menu for 1Password 5 > License... The window that opens will show you if a license has been applied (if not, it will say it's in trial mode).

Does that help/make sense? Let us know how it goes and if you have any questions about that. Thanks!

  • Thanks Drew. There's something familiar about that last scenario, and indeed, when I checked the License page in my Agile web store version, it says "purchased on the Mac App Store". And I think there was a specific reason I did that - though I can't remember what it was! Is there any particular reason to prefer one version over the other?

    Hi @davidestevenssound,

Ah, that makes more sense - it sounds like you had the Mac App Store version installed on that Mac at one point, so the AgileBits Store version activated itself and wouldn't have been giving you any "trial mode" messages.

If you had already purchased the Mac App Store version, my best guess is that you saw the AgileBits Store version was updated to version 5.3.2, while the Mac App Store version was still at version 5.3, so you may have downloaded the AgileBits Store version in order to get the latest update. But the only changes in the 5.3.1 and 5.3.2 updates were related to purchasing/licensing 1Password from the AgileBits Store. Those changes don't apply to the Mac App Store version, so there was no need to release updates there.

That's only a guess of course, and I don't know for sure why you switched to the AgileBits Store version on one of your Macs. Since you don't use iCloud sync, you shouldn't notice any difference between the two versions, aside from where future updates come from (but you should be automatically notified of updates either way).

Since you've had the Mac App Store version installed on that Mac before, switching back to it might take a few extra steps, but shouldn't be difficult - and we'll be happy to help with that! Or if you decide to keep using the AgileBits Store version there, that's no problem at all - the choice is yours! :)

  • thanks again Drew. As long as there's no real difference, I may as well change it back. Then auto updates will occur. Everything seems ok again now I've solved my sync problem (turned out I had 2 agilekeychains in Dropbox! and I'd connected my 2nd mac and iPad to the older one. Oops!)
