It took me a while to realize it, but after the update to 1password 5 I lost all of the Notes in my logins. I kept lots of useful info in the notes - such as answers to security questions, account numbers, etc. Is there a fix for this ?

    Hi @amykosh,

I'm so sorry to hear your notes are missing in 1Password 5! I don't know why something like that would happen, but we'll do our best to figure out what went wrong and see if there's a way to get that information back.

I found your license for 1Password 5 for Mac in our system (by searching for the email address from your forum account) and I see you just bought that license a few days ago. Before that purchase, what version of 1Password were you using? And, were you using that previous version on the same Mac? If you had been using 1Password 3, do you still have that version on your Mac?

In your message, I see you're using Dropbox sync, so you can use a feature we call 1PasswordAnywhere, which allows you to view your 1Password data by logging into your Dropbox account from a web browser. Please try doing that by following the steps in this guide. When you use 1PasswordAnywhere to view your data, do you see the notes in your Login items?

Do you sync your 1Password data with any other devices? If so, do you see your notes in the Logins on those devices?

Also, what steps (if any) did you take to get your data into 1Password 5? If the older version was on the same Mac, version 5 may have found your existing vault and used that, so maybe it just asked for your master password the first time you opened it. But if not, did you need to set up Dropbox sync to migrate your data? Or did you export the data from the old version and import it to version 5? Anything you can tell us about the steps you took to get your data into 1Password 5 might help us figure out what happened.

Sorry for all the questions! But I think the answers will be really helpful in figuring out what's going on. Thanks in advance!

Before v5 I was using the most recent v4 version. This is a new macpro that was upgraded with OSX 10.10.5 from an older G5 mac running the version 4 with OSX Mavericks. At one time or another I also had 1password v3 but not on this new machine. and it wasn't restored in the setup from time machine.
    I sync in Dropbox.
I use 1Password across 3 devices- all the newest mac OS (iPad, iPhone 5S).
the notes do not show in any of my devices at this point. Presumable they all synced at some point after I upgraded for the new yosemite OSX.

When I installed the 1Password v5 update it did ask for my master password the first time and then asked if I wanted to merge with the older information in the existant vault. I entered the password and said yes, merge.
And I had to redirect it to the correct file in Dropbox which I did.

And when I use the 1Passoerd anywhere, the notes are also gone.

    Hi @amykosh,

Thanks for the details! Do you still have the older Mac that was running Mavericks and 1Password 4? If so, and if your notes are still in 1Password on that Mac, we can definitely help to get all that data to 1Password 5 on your new Mac and your iOS devices.

If you no longer have that Mac, there might still be some options. On your current Mac, it sounds like you had been using 1Password 4 before you upgraded to Yosemite and 1Password 5. Unless you had done a clean install of Yosemite, 1Password 5 should have all the same data as 1Password 4, as it is really an update of the same app and uses all the same locations to store data on the Mac. Also, 1Password automatically backs up your data, so you might have a 1Password backup that has the data from your notes fields.

Before checking that, please make a new backup of your current data by opening the 1Password 5 app and going to File > Backup. That will open the Backup preferences and show all your backups (including the new one you just made). You'll also see the date and time each backup was created. Do you see backups that were made before you updated to version 5?

You can try restoring from one of those backups by selecting the one you want and clicking the Restore button. If the restored vault is also missing the notes fields, try restoring from an earlier backup. You can do this as many times you'd like, in order to see if any backups have that data. If you find one that has your notes, then the next thing to figure out is if you've made any changes to your 1Password data since that backup was created (if so, let us know and we'll help you to merge it all together so you don't lose anything).

Now, in case you only have a few recent backup files in 1Password, and none of them has your notes, I noticed you also mentioned Time Machine backups. Do you have backups of one of your Macs from before the notes went missing? If so, you may have older 1Password backups there, and we can help you retrieve those so you can restore them.

Please let us know how it all goes, thanks!

Can you post the steps for trying to retrieve the older backup via Time Machine? I can try to find it that way as I do have older Time Machine backups (least I think I still do).

    Hi @amykosh,

I did a clean install of Yosemite.

Ok, so that probably means that if you open 1Password and go to 1Password > Preferences > Backup, you don't have any backups prior to the Yosemite upgrade? I'm not sure how far back those backups go, but you might still want to try restoring from the earliest backup just to make sure whether or not your missing notes are there (since you aren't sure exactly when they disappeared).

I have tried going back to an earlier backup on Dropbox from before I did the install but still the notes are missing.

Although it didn't work, that was a good idea! Was that the oldest backup saved by Dropbox? If not, you can always try going back to an older (or even the oldest) .agilekeychain file backed up by Dropbox to see if your notes are there.

Can you post the steps for trying to retrieve the older backup via Time Machine?

Absolutely! For reference, the AgileBits Store version of 1Password stores its backups in the following location on your Mac (and I'll explain how to get there in Time Machine):

    ~/Library/Application Support/1Password 4/Backups/

Please note the ~ indicates your Mac user folder. With that in mind, you can follow these steps to find your backups in Time Machine:

    • Quit 1Password (if it's open)
    • In the Finder, click the Go menu and select Go to Folder
    • Copy and paste (or type) the following line into the Go to the folder field: ~/Library/
    • Click the Go button (this should open your username/Library folder)
    • Now click the Time Machine icon in your Mac's menu bar, and select Enter Time Machine
    • Using the up/down arrows next to the open window in Time Machine, go back to the desired date
    • In the Library folder (which should be open), navigate to the following location:

    /Application Support/1Password 4/Backups/

    • You can restore one or more of the .1p4_zip files from that folder
    • Exit Time Machine, then open the 1Password app and go to File > Restore
    • Try using one of the restored backup files - or if you had restored them to a different location on your Mac, click Find Backup, then select a backup file

If you run into any trouble, just let us know exactly what happens, and we'll continue from there. Thanks!
