Am I able to put an entire folder with a bunch of documents into a vault?

  • Hi @dck1862,

Sadly attachments are restricted to individual files. Now you can add multiple files but anything other than that and 1Password will display the following error message.

File is a bundle or folder
The file XXX is a bundle or folder.
    Attachments must be regular files.

Now you could use OS X's ability to compress a selection of files or folders into a ZIP file as a ZIP file is a single file. There is a limit of 5MB on the attachment size though which may also affect you here.

If you have a lot of folders that you wish to keep encrypted you might want to look at encrypted disk images. It's something OS X can do or there is also Knox. It's a vault manager but when we say vault we mean encrypted disks where you store any files you chose much like you would on the internal drive on your Mac as opposed to the very structured vault that 1Password has.

So it partly depends on what you would like to see attached. If it's a few files in a folder a ZIP file will allow you to do so but you would have to copy the ZIP file to disk to look at the contents. If it's not too many files you could attach the files as a group, removing just the outer folder. If the folder structure is important though then it would be either the route of a ZIP file or considering an encrypted disk image.

This is me just thinking out loud at the moment, so please do let us know what you think

I follow what you're saying here. I see that I can create a "folder" using 1PW, and then bring multiple files into that folder. That works for me. I'll have to remember the 5mb limitation but, over all it should work.

Thanks much for the info. I appreciate it!

    Hi @dck1862,

Here's a bit more information about Folders (and Tags) in 1Password 5 for Mac. It's a way to organize your 1Password items, rather than files. Files can only be added to 1Password as attachments to items, and you can add multiple attachments to one item. That being said, though, 1Password is not primarily intended as a file storage application--but Knox is.
