Syncing, protecting & restoring data while imac's in the shop.

I have to send my 27 inch iMac into the shop to replace a bad video card.
Obviously , I don't want to send it off with my 1password data on the hard drive. I've been syncing between my iMac, my iPad2, and my iPhone 6+ over Wi-Fi.
Three questions:
1. What's the best way to remove my 1password data from my iMac before I send it in?
2. Will I still be able to keep my iPad and iPhone in sync over Wi-Fi? Or do I need to move to DropBox or ICloud to sync them without the Mac?
3. When I get my Mac back, will I be able to restore it with the most up-to-date Saint house were data from my iPhone and iPad syncing?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me
Ken Katen

Hello Keninsf. Allow me to attempt to answer your questions one by one.

⁍ The ‘best’ way is subjective so I will suggest a secure [overkill according to some] manner. If you have a program that wipes data [preferably using a seven-pass algorithm] use it. It is not likely third parties will examine your hard disk to collect your 1Password vault but one should never be completely comfortable simply ‘deleting’ anything sensitive. If you do not have such a program but if you are interested I will provide suggestions that will be of no cost to give you sufficient time to wipe the vault from your system. Obviously, you should always ensure the latest edition of your vault is synchronised with both iDevices before ridding your Mac of the vault. If you are not interested in wiping your vault simply press ⌘-⌫ to move the vault to the trash and ⌘-⇧-⌫ to ‘delete’ its contents.
⁍ The Wi-Fi Sync functionality requires a computer running either Mac OS or Windows. This is because the desktop serves as the Wi-Fi Sync server. Due to the fact you must switch to either iCloud or Dropbox synchronisation whilst your desktop machine is inaccessible to you.
⁍ Your final question confused me slightly so I will ask your question to you and hopefully I correctly interpreted it. Did you ask if you are able to re-synchronise the most up-to-date copy of the vault from whichever cloud hosting service of your choice back to your Mac once it is returned to you? If that is what you meant the answer is yes. This can be accomplished via [a] reverting to Wi-Fi Sync as you used before temporarily switching to either iCloud or Dropbox; or [b] linking 1Password for Mac to your vault in either iCloud or Dropbox. To synchronise via iCloud requires the Mac app store version of 1Password so if you have the version directly from the website Dropbox will be your only synchronisation option.

I hope that adequately answers all three of your questions. If not simply reply and somebody will will rectify that.

    Hi @keninsf,

I'm glad to hear you're being careful about keeping your data safe & secure! I just wanted to add a few things to the information from @Mystery_Man. First, 1Password is secure by design, and even if you left all your 1Password data on your Mac when you sent it in for repairs, no one would be able to access that data without your master password. Of course, I absolutely understand that you'll feel safer if you remove your 1Password data before handing the Mac over to someone else! :)

Before deleting anything, you'll of course want to make sure you have your 1Password data backed up somewhere else so you can restore it when you get your Mac back. You can re-sync it from your iPad/iPhone, but it's better to have an actual backup file saved somewhere. 1Password for Mac automatically makes backups of your data, and you can find those backups by opening 1Password and going to File > Backup, then clicking the Show Files button. The Finder window that opens will have your 1Password backups, and you can copy them somewhere like a USB drive, or some other form of storage.

As for deleting the 1Password data from your Mac, whether or not you use an app to securely wipe data from your hard drive like Mystery_Man suggested, you'll want to know how to find/remove your 1Password data on your Mac. To do that, you can follow the steps here: How do I start over with an empty vault?

When following the steps in that article, you can trash/delete the files it mentions, instead of moving them to the Desktop.

Just to reiterate what Mystery_Man said: Wi-Fi sync will not work directly between two iOS devices, so if you want to sync 1Password between your iPad and iPhone while your Mac is being repaired, you'll need to switch to Dropbox sync or iCloud sync.

When you get your Mac back, you can install the 1Password app, then either sync the data from your iOS devices, or restore from the backup files. You can find steps for all that in this section of our User Guide.

Hopefully this helps, but please let us know if you need anything else. Thanks! :)
