Husband, Wife, iMacs, Mountain Lion, NO DropBox, NO iCloud -- USB cable or Wi-Fi

We have two iMacs running Mac Os X 10.8 5 (Mountain Lion) and 1Password 4.4.3, in two different locations.
For (obvious) reasons we do NOT want to use DropBox; and we do not use iCloud.
We both synchronize our iPhones 5s to our respective 1Passwords using WiFi.

Could you tell us how to share all, or part of, our respective vaults on our iPhones (and, possibly, on our 1Passwords) ?
I created secondary vaults, only to discover that 1Password does not import from secondary vaults.

We would like to use our beloved USB cables -- or WiFi.

Thanks, Vittorio

  • Greetings @VittorioF,

Sadly your options with 1Password 4 for Mac are limited. You can Wi-Fi Sync a primary vault between your Mac and iOS device but synchronisation of secondary vaults didn't come until 1Password 5 for Mac which is Yosemite only. As much as you may want to avoid Dropbox it is the only option for syncing of secondary vaults when 1Password 4 is involved. There once was the ability to sync vaults using iTunes and a USB cable but I believe that has been gone for quite some time now, well before I joined the team.

The only option I can think of for multiple vaults would be if you only edited items on say your Mac and then every so often you manually copied a backup from your Mac to your iOS device and restored the backup. As a backup contains all of the vaults this would allow you to keep the two relatively in sync. It's a poor workaround as it limits you to one way changes and there would be more steps but it would allow you to keep your vaults off of Dropbox if that is important. Is that something you might consider?

I wish I could offer better suggestions but 1Password 4 doesn't contain the required functionality I'm afraid - sorry.

The USB option was susnet awhile back as @littlebobbytables mentioned. I don't think it ever made it out of beta. I did not use it, as Dropbox works wonderfully for me.

The USB tool ceased development before/or in September, 2013. If you wish to read why it ceased development. https://discussions.agilebits.com/discussion/15790/is-the-usb-sync-tool-dead-now#latest Short story: Crash's that couldn't be resolved. :(

Thank you, @littlebobbytables; thank you @thightower.
I will follow your suggestions for a one-way sync until the day we will move to Yosemite or further.
As many other report, DropBox is NOT an option when confidentiality is important.

@VittorioF: (Un)fortunately this kind of statement isn't relevant when it comes to 1Password. Your 1Password data is end-to-end encrypted, so 1Password simply doesn't depend on the sync service to protect your data. 1Password is secure by design, not by chance. Just as it's important to get security right, facts matter too. Cheers! :)
