I cannot change my saved password

I followed the procedure to change my password and everything went well. The new generated password was installed but when I pushed the final "change password" I received an error message that stated the password couldn't be changed.
It wasn't changed.

    Hi @egleixner,

I'm sorry you're running into some trouble when trying to change a password!

Are you trying to change a password for one of your website accounts? If so, please make sure you're following the steps here: How to change a password for a site saved in 1Password

If those are the steps you're following, where exactly do you run into the problem? Does the error message appear when you submit the password change on the website? Is the error message coming from the website itself, or is it a message in 1Password? What is the full/exact error you see?

If the website is giving you the error about not being able to change the password, that could mean there's a temporary issue with that site, or it might mean the generated password didn't meet the password requirements of that site. For example, some sites won't allow certain characters/symbols to be used in the password, or the password you generated might be longer than the maximum length allowed by that site. Perhaps this will be a bit clearer once you let us know the exact error.

    Thanks in advance!

Drew, can I use 1password with Quicken where it downloads my broker accounts? If not, I won’t try to solve the problem with changing the password.

    Hi @egleixner,

I'm not sure if I understand - are you asking about using 1Password with the Quicken website, or with a Quicken application installed on your Mac? Or are you asking about how to store broker account information in 1Password?

If you're trying to save a Login item to help you sign into the Quicken website, that should work like Login items for other websites. But if you're asking about a Quicken app on your Mac, 1Password isn't able to interact with other apps the way it can with web browsers (other Mac apps don't have extensions like web browsers do). To use 1Password with another app on your Mac, you would need to copy & paste your info between 1Password and that app. To make it a bit easier, you can use 1Password mini, which is the 1Password icon in the menubar at the top of the screen. We have more information here: 1Password mini

If I misunderstood, please let us know exactly what you're trying to do. Thanks!

Thanks for the response Drew. I've decided not to use the program which changes my password to a more secure password. If I change the password, Quicken will not be able to download my broker accounts

  • Greetings @egleixner,

We'll certainly do our best to work with you but part of the difficulty is I don't think anybody here uses Quicken. Am I correct in believing that you manage your broker accounts online and Quicken can access the information directly using a supplied API. That means you need to enter the new password into Quicken too at a guess. Is the issue of how to enter the new password into Quicken?

If you don't want to pursue this that's fine, but if we can be of assistance we will certainly try.

Thank you for your offer to help. For the time being, I'd rather keep proceeding with the installation of 1password and accept the fact that my password isn't as secure as it could be.
