5 Minutes after a Restore of 370 items, I have 320 Items. Where did they go?

I tested a bootbable backup external Hard Drive. I wanted to make sure I had a good backup. When i went back to my regular HD, and open 1Password, my passwords were gone. I restored the backups from this morning. At the time of the back up I had 370 items. 5 minutes later and without touching anything, I have 320 items in 1Pasword. Where did my items go?

    Hi @Curt_ME,

I'm sorry for the delay in getting back to you about this! We've had a bit of a spike in support requests over the past week.

To make sure I understand the problem that happened: You had 370 items in 1Password when using it on your regular hard drive. You booted into your external backup drive to make sure it was bootable, then booted back into your regular hard drive again. At that point, when you opened 1Password on your regular drive, all your data was missing, so you restored from a backup made earlier that day. That restored all 370 items, but 5 minutes later some of those items suddenly disappeared, leaving you with 320 items. Is that correct, or did I misunderstand the sequence of events?

I have a feeling I may have misunderstood something, so I'll wait to hear back from you to confirm what happened. When you reply, please also elaborate on when you booted into the external backup drive - did you launch 1Password while booted into that drive? If so, did you open the copy of 1Password that is stored on the backup drive, or the copy that is on the regular drive?

Also, when you restored from a backup, do you mean you restored your entire Mac (or only certain files) from the external backup drive, or do you mean you opened the 1Password app and used the Restore feature to restore data from a 1Password backup? If you open 1Password and go to the menu for 1Password > Preferences, then select the Backup tab, how many items do your recent backups have?

    Thanks in advance!

You have the sequence of events correct. I was only testing the backup drive so I probably did not open 1Password.

I restored my passwords using the backup file created by 1Password. The recent backups had 370 items.

    Thanks for the help.

    Hi @Curt_ME,

Thanks for clarifying that. So, do you currently only have 320 items in 1Password? If so, and if you restore from the most recent backup that has 370 items, what is the item count next to All Items show in the sidebar?

If your backup says there are 370 items, but All Items only shows 320 after you restore from that backup, there are a couple possible reasons for that. One is that you have items in the Trash in 1Password. You can find that at the bottom of the left sidebar. Do you have some items in there?

Another possibility is that you have multiple vaults - the backup files show the total item count for all vaults, not just your Primary vault. Go to the 1Password menu and look for an option that says Switch to Vault. If you see that, you have one or more secondary vaults set up in 1Password.

Does that help at all? Let us know what you find, thanks!
