finger print scanner and 1Password

it's been awhile since this topic was talked about, so I'm opening a discussion now.
We have several Mac Pro's, iMacs and MacBook Air's and would really like to use a finger print scanner
to open 1Password. Is this in the works?

Thanks, Doug

    Hi @doug_ellingson,

Are you asking about a feature similar to our support for Touch ID in the iOS version of 1Password? If so, that works only on newer iPhone/iPad models that include the Touch ID sensor built into the device. Also, Touch ID support in 1Password for iOS is possible because, starting in iOS 8, Apple allowed third party developers to use the Touch ID API.

Macs are different as they don't come with built-in fingerprint scanners. I'm assuming you're using a third party fingerprint scanner that connects to your Mac? Admittedly, I'm not too familiar with accessories like that, but I believe they have their own software in order to work with a Mac. For 1Password to work with third party fingerprint scanners, we'd likely need to write custom code for each different model. I suspect that would take a significant amount of work for our developers, but would only benefit a very small number of customers. In addition to that, it might require having the scanner's software store your master password for 1Password, so there would be concerns related to security.

That's not to say it would never happen, but it's more likely to happen if Apple starts building Touch ID (or similar hardware/API) into Macs, as that would make it immensely easier for us.

Of course, it's possible that I've misunderstood your question. If so, please do let us know, thanks! :)
