Shared logins UI sadness
hey agile bits friends! consider this a bug report, or perhaps a request for a UI improvement?
i have two logins for the same website, each saved with different names (the big field up by the favicon in the entry). we'll say:
- Website Name <--- this is my original entry
- Website Name (Joint) _<--- this is a shared entry from another 1Password installation _
number 2 (Website Name (Joint)) is a joint account between my spouse and myself, and the login is shared from his 1Password to mine. in his 1Password, it's saved as "Website Name". in my 1Password, it's saved as "Website Name (Join)".
recently, he changed his password so he sent me the updated information. when i click the sharing link to add into 1Password, it asks me "Do you want to update 'Website Name'" login?
now, i'm not sure which one this is referring so i rename number 1 (Website Name) to "Website Name (Personal)" and try to re-open the shared link. i get the same prompt: "Do you want to update 'Website Name' login?" and i still don't know which one it is updating!
i'm a pretty smart person, so i am fairly certain that it is going to update the shared one, but i also don't want to take that chance and risk losing my password to the other account.
perhaps the dialog could be updated to use the saved name of the login in my local vault, instead of the shared name? i don't care what thye've called it after i've renamed it in my vault - i always want to use my vault's name for the thing, or else i won't know what the thing is for.
steps to repro:
- create one login for a website, "Website Name" (where that's obviously the website name)
- have someone share a login for you for the same website, saved in their 1Password as "Website Name" (we shared via iMessage)
- rename the shared one to something different in your vault
- have that someone make changes to their login and re-share (again, via iMessage)
- click the link to add to 1Password, note the misleading dialog
optionally:
step 3, part b: rename your login from "Website Name" to "Website Name Party Town" or whatever, note that you get the same error.

Hi @helloiamahuman,
Indeed you are and we wouldn't dare question you (love the username haha).
Now regarding your observations. Having tested I would go one step further and state that the word update is actually quite misleading as what the dialog really means is it's going to overwrite. So to be much more accurate we should ask if you want to overwrite the local item with this other item (add titles to help distinguish). So if you have alterations in the item you wish to keep this will stampede all over them and leave you really annoyed and upset.
The one thing I can at least confirm is it does plan to alter the shared one and not your personal one. It's based on the UUID of the item which remains the same even when you share an item.
That dialog though does need improvement so thank you for raising the point.
Now can I ask, do you share just this one Login item or do you share more? The reason I ask is a secondary vault that is shared between the two of you might work out better for you. It's as secure as synchronising your primary vault over Dropbox and any modifications made by either of you are pushed and pulled pretty much instantly and more importantly, it will be performing updates rather than overwriting. If it's a single Login item that doesn't change too often then this is possibly overkill but maybe it will be useful? If that sounds like it could be of interest we have a page Syncing your 1Password data where you can learn more and of course we're here too if you have questions.
