Can you explain how master passwords work?

I use Dropbox to access multiple vaults on multiple devices. I don't understand how you can use a different master password for the same vault used by each device. For example, I created a vault that is shared by another person. When the person opened the vault on their device, they were prompted for the master password that I used to create the vault. But from that point on they were able to open the vault using their own master password. How is their master password associated with the master password used to create the vault? How do you change the master password used to create the vault?

  • Hello @mathurd,

When it comes to secondary vaults in 1Password for Mac and iOS what happens is after you've added a secondary vault to your copy of 1Password it stores the encryption keys for that vault in your primary vault. So when you unlock your primary vault it allows to also access all secondary vaults that are attached to this copy of 1Password. It's a user convenience, as you can easily switch between multiple vaults in a Mac and iOS device this means you aren't constantly asked for several passwords. So the password for the secondary vault hasn't been altered at all, anybody else wanting to access it will still require the correct password to add it.

At the moment there isn't an easy, UI provided way to change the password of a secondary vault. We do have an improvement in our beta that allows this so and I would expect it to be in the next 1Password for Mac public release assuming no nasty surprises are found before then.

Does that help explain how secondary vaults work? If you have any follow up questions or feel I haven't answered something in enough detail do please let us know.

Thank you, @littlebobbytables. That explanation makes sense.
