Can I delete the primary vault on laptop and replace with the vault I have been using on my desktop?

My Mac laptop and desktop have two different primary vaults (A/B) -- not what I need. It seems you cannot delete a primary vault - is this correct?

Ego I've tried to set up up a secondary vault "C" which both computers can access. I'm having difficulty working out how to do this.

Have spent hours & finding it very frustrating. I have a security issue which means I need help to sort this asap.

Both Macs running latest Yosemite (10.10.5) and both browsers latest Chrome version.

  • Hi @chalkysan,

We can definitely help but I want to make sure nothing we suggest results in the loss of data.

The first bit of information we'll need is Which version of 1Password you running as Yosemite means you could be running 1Password 5 but it isn't guaranteed.

The next thing we'll need to know is how are things set up at the moment.

Your desktop has a primary vault that must be good as you want to see it on your MacBook. That's fine. Now is there anything in the primary vault on the MacBook that needs to be kept or are you saying that you want the contents actually thrown away? Does your MacBook have secondary vaults that you need to keep and are they synchronised at all? If you haven't used sync before (and I apologise if I've misjudged your skill level), sync is what allows you to keep more than one copy of 1Password synchronised and it can happen over Dropbox for example where we store a sync container that each copy reads and writes to as changes occur.

I ask these questions as we can start over on your Macbook but it means discarding everything and starting afresh. I don't want to cause any data loss when we do this. I don't know if it will help but if you feel comfortable talking about the security issue even in general terms and it is somehow connected to 1Password we can maybe offer advice. These are public forums though so if you don't feel comfortable with posting the details that's understandable.

Once we hear back from you hopefully we can supply a set of instructions that will meet your needs.

Thanks for your help LBT. I am using 1P version 5 on both laptop and desktop.

I set up a secondary vault ("C") but it is empty so I do not need to sync this.

I am happy to delete the 1P on the laptop -- and start again. Hopefully however I can use the primary vault from my desktop as it contains more data.

If you can help me with this next step, I would be most grateful.

@chalkysan: It will be simplest to let 1Password do most of the work for you here and merge your data from the two vaults.

    1. But first thing's first: File > Backup
    2. Then in 1Password go into Preferences > Sync and set it to None.
    3. Set up Sync from scratch, this time choosing the vault from your other device that you want to merge with (say, A)...
    4. ..and then Merge with Existing
    5. After they finish syncing, all you need to do is delete the extra (B) vault to avoid any confusion in the future (only if you're using Dropbox).

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions! :)
