My old computer crashed and I purchased a new Apple MacBook Pro. I had a backup on my external hard drive through Time Machine. I have tried to get it running but not working.

If you want to find your 1P data file in your backup this knowledge base article will help you:

Where does 1Password store its data?

If your problem is more than that please tell us and someone will help you more than I have. :)

I had a backup on my external hard drive through Time Machine. I have tried to get it running but not working.

@cindy_wright: Do you mean you're unable to access the Time Machine backup for some reason? I hope not, as AgileBits has neither your 1Password data nor the Master Password used to secure it, so this isn't something we can 'recover' for you to help directly...

However, if you do have access to the backup (!!!) we should be able to help you find the data. Can you tell me the OS and 1Password versions you were using on the old computer? It will determine what we're looking for and where to find it. Alternatively, if you have your 1Password data sync'd to other devices, it may be simplest to just sync it back to your computer. Please let me know. I look forward to hearing back from you! :)

It is an OS X Yosemite, version 10.10.4
I do have access to my backup and have tried to migrate it, but did not work.
The 1 Password version is 5.3.2
    Thank you for your help!

  • Hi @cindy_wright,

I do apologise, but there are still a number of possible scenarios that might apply so we still need to make sure we understand.

When you got your new MacBook Pro did you use the Time Machine backup you had to restore a complete image of the old machine. If you did this and it was successful it should have been just as you left it on the old Mac, applications, files should all be where they were. If you did this then 1Password should just work as all of it's file and more importantly your vault should have been restored.

Given you're contacting us this scenario seems unlikely.

If you set up a new user then OS X is treating your backup one for a different machine. There is still a way to recover files but there isn't a great amount of information out there on this and I'm unable to test this due to my setup. This link is for a guide created by a dedicated user over in the Apple forums, and it's pretty much the one-stop shop of Time Machine information. The guide is How can I see my backups, or the Backups for a different Mac? and the section titled The Browse Other Backup Disks Option is what will be of great interest as it talks about restoring items from a backup that doesn't belong to the current Mac. It will also link you to another page should you need to simply extract a particular folder or file and save it elsewhere because OS X refuses to restore it to the original location.

Now if you're in this situation you have my deepest sympathies as this seems like a big pain. If you're here though then a piece of information you will need is where does 1Password store your vault? As you're running 1Password 5.3.2 that means you're running the AgileBits Store version of 1Password and it's support folder can be found at ~/Library/Application Support/1Password 4/.

Do either of these mirror your situation at all or were the events different? The more you can describe the better we can understand and hopefully assist. As long as you have a working backup it does mean you should be able to recover which is the important part to focus on.
