setting up a new file with imported data from a primary vault so my wife can have her own login
Hi, I need to give my wife access to my 1password file but with her own password, not mine. Can I do it? I was trying to figure out how to start from scratch and then import my data into the new file for her, but cannot seem to figure out how to start a new file from scratch.
1Password Version: 5.01
Extension Version: Not Provided
OS Version: 10.10.5
Sync Type: iCloud or folder

Hey @dkstudio! The best way of doing this would be to share a vault. Shared vaults have separate Master Passwords, but changes sync between them. :) Here's how to share a vault: https://support.1password.com/guides/mac/share-a-vault.html
If you decide that you don't want changes to sync between them, let me know and I'll provide instructions for that.

Ok I'll try that.

Shared vaults have separate Master Passwords and data from other vaults, so changes made to a shared vault only affect that specific vault.
@penderworth: To be clear,
Shared vaults can have separate Master Passwords from your other vaults, but changes won't sync between **separate vaults **.
It may be splitting hairs a bit, but it can be an important distinction I think. :chuffed:

@dkstudio: For example, you can have a primary vault that contains only your data, and then a secondary vault that you share with your wife. The secondary vault you share with your wife will be identical for both of you: it will have the same Master Password and items stored within it, regardless of where you sync, store, or copy it. The vault itself does not change between computers. After all, that's the point of sharing it in the first place — you want to give your wife something you have.
And keep in mind that any time you give a secret to someone else, you can't later take it back. I hope this helps clarify things! :)

So, this may be a bit more complicated. I use Dropbox and sync all my devices and data with it, including 1Password. If I share 1Password with my wife, would she need to use Dropbox as well? She uses Box instead because she gets more space for free. Can I use a local folder sync (I use Chronosynch religiously) instead, but still retain my Dropbox to sync to all my devices? Sorry gents, but I'm a little confused here. I just want to give her access to the same vault I am using, but with her own password to open up 1Password. Sounds simple, and maybe it is.
Thx

Here's what I did:
1 - exported my Primary Vault in Dropbox to my wife's Box Documents folder in her home user account
2 - made a new vault, named it Deia, set a new password for her (different than my Primary)
3 - imported that same exported data to the new Deia vault (now there is Primary and Deia), both with the same data
4 - set up folder synch of the Deia vault to her Box Documents folder
5 - go into her user account and click on the Deia agilekeychain file, enter the password I set for her, but it didn't work. I had to enter my master password, Why?I think i'm close but it's not exactly what I want.
Please help if you can. Screenshots attached.

@dkstudio: Yes. Dropbox shares only work between Dropbox accounts. But it is extremely likely that the free storage tier that Dropbox offers will be more than sufficient for your 1Password data.

ChronoSync sounds like a great idea! I know that many 1Password users have ChronoSync set up to sync their vaults between computers...but the question is if this could have some interaction with Dropbox. Using both has simply never come up. So whatever you do, be sure to backup your data religiously (though I suspect that perhaps you do already...) You could, in theory, sync your own devices using Dropbox, and then use ChronoSync to sync the data from your Dropbox folder to your wife's Box.com folder. It's so crazy, it might just work!

No need to apologize! This is what we're here for. However, what you are proposing is impossible. If you share a vault encrypted using your Master Password, it can only be decrypted using your Master Password, the same way that you can't give someone else a completely unique key compared to your own to open the door to your house. You can change the locks, but everyone needs to have a matching key in order to get in.
Now, I'm not entirely sure I understand your description of the problem you're having, but I suspect it's related to the previous paragraph. Maybe that helps provide some insight. Please let me know! :)
