Several questions pre-purchase

Good Morning,

I've been reading your website regarding pre and post purchase questions but still I'm having some questions which I couldn't find a specific answer on the web.

  1. I'm planning to buy one normal 1PASSWORD license which as far as I've read it is available up to 6 family members, but, as a matter of fact I have 3 family members (not including myself) which I would need to install 1PASSWORD and each of them they have several macs / imacs, for instance:
  • There's an iMAC shared by my parents so that means 2 users / 2 accounts - 1 device

    • Another MAC Mini belongs to my dad - 1 account - 1 device
    • As well he owns a MAC Book Air - 1 account - 1 device

There's one MAC Book air owned by my sister - 1 account - 1 device

Then there's me with 2 MAC Book pro's (old and new edition) - 2 accounts (different ones actually) - 2 devices

Total number of devices would be 6

What If I get a new device?

  1. Regarding the licensing, IF I buy the app store version, is it compatible with family sharing?
  2. Right now it's time for changes as you may know, El Capitan is about to be released meaning that probably you will switch to version 6 if I am correct, does it means that if I buy now your version 5 then I will have to pay for the new version 6?
  3. Is version 5 compatible ready with El Capitan?

Thanks for your time

Regards

The licenses are provided on a per platform, per user basis. Up to six family members may use one license on as many devices of the same platform as they use themselves. It doesn't matter how many Macs are involved. It's the number of users that matter.

    1. If you buy from the Mac App Store, it is compatible with Family Sharing. If you find a need for the iOS version, though, that is free to use in its basic form, but the more advanced Pro features are obtained through an in-app purchase, for which Apple does not allow Family Sharing.

    2. Version 6 has not been released, although El Capitan was released yesterday. No announcement has been made about whether version 6, whenever it is released, will require an upgrade fee or will be free to registered users of version 5. AgileBits in the past has allowed free upgrades to paid upgrade versions when a buyer has purchased a copy recently. But I don't have any insight into their thinking in this case, and I don't think they will reveal their plans in advance either. If version 6 is a paid upgrade and your copy comes from the Mac App Store, you will have to pay the full price for the upgrade. Apple provides no way to discount upgrades for registered users, so everyone will pay the same. If your copy comes from AgileBits, they have always offered generous upgrade discounts. But remember that you cannot use iCloud for syncing if you don't buy directly from Apple.

    3. Version 5 is indeed compatible with El Capitan. I updated my Mac yesterday, and I'm running 1Password 5 on it. I haven't read about any problems, although I suppose it's possible some may emerge as more users adopt the OS X upgrade. Your license will allow you to continue to use version 5 as long as you like. You will not have to upgrade to version 6 if you don't want to. But it is true that OS updates sometimes do break existing software, and older version of 1Password aren't likely to be updated if that happens.

Thanks for all the info, much appreciated.

I've read that it is possible to convert one app store 1PASSWORD app to non-app store, if I would buy it from the app store and then convert it to non app store, would I loose sync with icloud?

And on the contrary, If I buy one non app store and convert it to app store (I've seen it is possible either way) would I earn icloud sync?

If you convert from the Mac App Store to the AgileBits web store version, you would indeed lose access to iCloud for syncing. Only the version sold by Apple has access to iCloud for that purpose. The conversion to the AgileBits version is free, but only because AgileBits controls the policy for their own store.

You cannot directly convert a license purchased from AgileBits to the Mac App Store release. If you decide you want the Mac App Store version, you will have to pay full price for it. Apple does not provide developers any way to transfer licenses to the Mac App Store. But if you do buy a license from Apple, you then would be able to use iCloud. Also, if your license comes from Apple, there will be no discount available when the time comes for a paid upgrade. Apple also does not provide any way for developers to offer upgrade discounts to registered users; everyone pays the same price.

You seem to be focused on iCloud as you think about this. iCloud works well, but it is more limited in its features than Dropbox. With Dropbox, you can sync more than one vault, and you can share data with other users. Neither of those are options with iCloud. Dropbox is an available option with both versions.

Hi back, good to know all of this info, and yeah, you're right on the icloud stuff hehe, It is just because I am using right now icloud keychain so I would like to keep it all within my cloud, I haven't had yet the needs of using dropbox or similar services (but never say never) it's just i was not decided at all to get this product and jump from keychain to 1password, with all of this info everything seems much more clear, probably I will get the app, now it just time to decide which one is more convenient for me, the one from the app store or the one from AgileBits, since I see 1Password at least much more complete than the basic product provided by keychain.

However this was really helpful, much obliged for all the information :chuffed:
