Firefox 40 and the 1 Password extension

ever since I updated to Firefox 40, I have been unable to activate the 1 Password autocomplete in that browser. Clicking the toolbar button results in the "looking for the 1 Password app" workflow, which does open 1 Password mini, but is seemingly unable to connect to the browser.

Also, while I have 1 Password 5, the extension reports 1 Password 4.4

Removing and re-installing the extension does not seem to help.

Is there a known Issue of some kind?

1Password Version: 4.4.3
Browser Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.11; rv:41.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/41.0

    Hi @ugilad,

It turns out we reached a very special point in version numbering where 4.4.3 could represent both 1Password 4 for Mac and our 1Password Browser Extension. Of course that doesn't help with clarity when we need to understand who is running what where.

So it seems clear that you're running El Capitan and Firefox 41 but can I just confirm that you're running 1Password 5 for Mac (is it 5.3 or 5.3.2?) and that it's the 1Password Firefox Extension that is version 4.4.3.

The combination should work. We've just released a new 1Password Browser Extension beta and before it was submitted to Mozilla for approval it was tested in Firefox Developer Edition which is version 43. We also tested version 4.4.3 with the latest version of Firefox at the time as part of our publishing steps.

When 1Password mini opens does it say Add Firefox Extension... above the search bar? That would support the idea that for reasons unknown (at the moment) the extension cannot communicate with 1Password mini.

It might be worth checking to see if there are any Firefox updates waiting to be installed. It might also be worth checking to see if a reboot of the Mac is needed.

The last question I would ask at this point is if you have any of the following?

    • Third party firewall software
    • Anti-virus software
    • Parental Control software
    • VPN or proxy

I'm wondering if something is blocking the WebSocket connection that the extension needs to make to 1Password mini.

If we're lucky something will help us identify the cause

Hi, Thanks for the quick reply.

Its worth mentioning I have also been chatting with Support: ref - #YDX-45132-884

    1 Password Version: 5.3 (530029)
1 Password extension version: 4.4.3, last Updated Oct 1st.
    Firefox version: 41.0.1

1 Password Mini does say "add firefox extension" - which takes me to the install workflow from the website.

Clicking the extension icon in the toolbar briefly loads 1 Password in the doc, highlights 1 Password Mini, but the extension then says: "cannot connect"

Update: Apparently EFF's "Privacy Badger" is the culprit.

I went through all extensions, disabling each and every one and testing.

Ahh, thanks for the update! That certainly makes sense. They do good work, but it can be a bit disorienting when two superficially unrelated things conflict like that. I appreciate you sharing, as it may benefit someone else in the future. Cheers! :)
