Possible to start over with new password?
I purchased 1P through the App Store in March. Installed and per instructions, created a master password. But I did not put 1P into use — I did not use it for any of my passwords, because I wanted to finish reading the background info. I got busy with other stuff & returned to 1P just now. I'm trying to set up 1P, but it's asking for the master password I created in March, which I didn't write down, and the hint is insufficient for me to remember. I want to just start from scratch, as if I'm just buying 1P for the first time and just now starting to use it on my laptop, with a new master password. I have followed the instructions on the 1P page "How do I start over with an empty vault?" But I'm still being asked to enter my master password before I can do anything.

If the knowledge base article to which you refer is not helping I think we need some more information from you before we can tell you what you need to do. Please tell us:
- What version of 1P for Mac you are using
- Whether you ever set up a method to sync your 1P data to any other device
- If relevant, what sync method you set up to sync your 1P data (Dropbox, iCloud or wifi)

Hey @zabcik! I'm not sure which knowledge base article you previously read, but could you please try the instructions in this one? You should be able to begin using 1Password again as if you just purchased it. Of course, remember that this process will delete your vault and all its data if it is not synced. If you're having trouble, please provide us with the info that Stephen_C mentioned above and we'll see what we can do to get things moving. :)

Stephen_C, here's the info you asked for:
1P version: 5.3 (530029) Mac App Store
OS version: Yosemite 10.10.5
Syncing: none
Penderworth: Yes, I have twice followed the instructions in the article you suggested. I still can't open 1P without being prompted for the forgotten password.
To repeat: What I'm trying to do is to start over with 1P as if I had just purchased it. When I did purchase it, I created a master password, then I set aside 1P to come back to it later. But when I did come back to it after a few months, I realized that I had forgotten the complicated password I'd first entered. I stored no data in the vault.0 -
Also, the reason that I created this problem for myself in the first place isn't that I'm an idiot :-) but because after I created that master pw, I read the article about How To Create A Secure Password, and that intimidated me into thinking I needed to create a better pw, and that stymied me for so long that I forgot the original one.

Hi @zabcik,
The only comment I want to make about How do I start over with an empty vault? is that all the steps are really important. If you don't quit 1Password mini it means 1Password is essentially running in memory and removing the files may not happen as cleanly as you believe they should. The reboot is equally important due to the caching that occurs in OS X these days. Other than that, as long as you're following the steps for the Mac App Store version then it should work.
There is another cause that we haven't considered yet and that is while you might not have really used 1Password before, is it possible you you tried syncing to see what happened? I ask because if 1Password for Mac finds data in the likes of iCloud it will import it in the belief that it's being helpful, not realising you now want to smack it over the nose with a rolled up newspaper. When you're asked for your Master Password does the screen look like this at all?
If it does then the part I've underlined is in fact clickable and will open a menu that looks like this
At this point the bottom option may be of great interest. The Create new vault... option will allow you to ignore wherever 1Password found data and tell it to simply create a brand new vault. If this turns out to be what happens then if you let us know where 1Password found data we can help you remove it as it relates to the old vault that you really don't want hanging around at all.
If none of this helps please do let us know as we can then request a diagnostic report and see what your machine can tell us about where it is finding data

Thanks @littlebobbytables. The second suggestion doesn't apply since the screen doesn't look at all like your screenshot. However your first suggestion might apply, because I can't quit 1P the way you suggested. I actually have to go into Applications and select 1P and then quit. If I do the way you suggested—select 1P from the top menu bar (which I assume means clicking on the 1P icon at the top) and then holding down Control, I get nothing. This is all I see:

@zabcik Sorry for the confusion there. It looks like you've got the 1Password Mini app running. To follow the instructions littlebobbytales posted, you'll need to open up the 1Password 5 app from your
/Applications
folder in Finder. 1Password Mini is for quickly accessing your data, but the full 1Password app needs to be used to get things set up. Let us know if you're able to get the app open and finish up the start over guide. :)0 -
Guys, thanks for your suggestions, but nothing you've suggested is working. I'm wondering if the problem is that I'm unable to quit 1P Mini per this step:
When I do this step, this is all I see:
In order to quit 1P, I actually have to go into my App folder, select 1P, open it, and then quit it. Then I do the next step, which is to move the folder “2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword-osx-helper” to my desktop. Then I restart my Mac, but when I start up 1P again, I STILL get prompted for my master password. It is NOT as if I'm using 1P for the first time.
As a test, this most recent time, I not only moved the file “2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword-osx-helper” to the desktop—I also moved it to the trash, and then tried to empty the trash. I got the following message. Does this help you with your diagnostic efforts?0 -
Hi @zabcik,
The
OnePassword.sqlite
file still being in use is a good indicator that things aren't going as smooth as they should. So the 1Password application and 1Password mini are deeply connected, at the hip no less and I think if I talk about this a bit it will help clarify things.
1Password mini is actually the core of 1Password and in a way there's nothing mini about its role. The main 1Password window is more a view of the contents made accessible by 1Password mini. So 'quitting' the main 1Password window is more akin to closing the 1Password mini menu than fully quitting 1Password. By default we have 1Password mini stay running so that 1Password can interact with your various web browsers as they too communicate with 1Password mini.
So if you open 1Password, the main window you will see the various drop down menu options that all OS X applications have. If you open the 1Password menu at the bottom it will say Quit 1Password and display the keyboard shortcut
⌘Q
. With that menu open now hold down the ctrl key⌃
. Quit 1Password now changes to Quit 1Password and 1Password mini and the keyboard shortcut now displays⌃⌘Q
. This will allow you to completely quit both 1Password and 1Password mini and if you still see the 1Password icon in your menu bar then you may very well have multiple copies of 1Password that we will then help you tame. The key part though is that with 1Password and 1Password mini both fully quit you can now continue with the steps in the How do I start over with an empty vault? guide and you should be able to delete the
OnePassword.sqlite
file once it is in Trash as no process should be accessing it.Now if I've misunderstood where the speed bump in the steps is I apologise and we'll work with you to get past the actual issue.

SUCCESS! However, there are 2 errors in your knowledge base article How do I start over with an empty vault that you may want to correct.
1) How to quit 1P Mini: as I've already said, the direction in the article did NOT work for me. When I clicked on the Mini icon and clicked on Control, I did NOT see an option for "Quit 1P and 1P mini." The alternate procedure that littlebobbytales suggested, however, did work: when I opened 1P through Applications, and then hit Quit while holding down the Control key, I FINALLY saw an option to quit both 1P & 1P mini.
However, this was not enough. When I followed the rest of the directions in the article and restarted my Mac and opened 1P, I was STILL getting the Master Password box. So the latest suggestion from littlebobbytales did not work, or at least did not fully work. So I repeated everything once again to see if I'd been missing something.
2) The article says to remove one folder from the Containers folder: “2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword-osx-helper”
But this time I noticed that there was a second 1P folder here: "com.agilebits.onepassword-osx".
I decided to move this folder to the desktop also. After I did this and went through the steps in the the article, I FINALLY got to the "Welcome to 1Password" window that you told me I should see.Was this second folder there all along and I just hadn't noticed it? Either way, there's no mention of it in the knowledge base article. This folder was created during my first failed attempt to set up 1P, since as you'll see, most of the internal folders are dated Apr. 11, 2015.

Greetings @zabcik,
There are two folders it is true,
2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword-osx-helper
andcom.agilebits.onepassword-osx
. It might be we've become so used to 1Password in some respects that we overlook certain aspects but to start 1Password in a clean state should only require the first folder, the one titled2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword-osx-helper
to be moved.I will highlight your points with the documents team though as this sort of input is invaluable.
