How can I add the license file for Mac as a part of an image or MDM profile?

I'd like to add our bulk license as part of our imaging or MDM workflow. How can I pass the license file to the application on the command line, or append some snippet to one of the plists?

Thanks,
Trevor

Ususally this is handled by the app store. You would buy the required cals in the app store and then have the MDM distribute the app the the users.

Our bulk license is for the AgileBits "1Password5" version and not the App Store version.

Unless agile allows for the license key to be applied using a preference or setting you would not be able to deliver the license key using an MDM in an alternate way. The MDM server just sends system settings and preferences to the remote computer embedded in a XML file. Any programs would need to be setup and sent as an invitation using the App store method of sending. Now if 1password can have its license key Delivered via a preference setting and 1password works with system profiles for settings then you may be able to get it to work. But the problem that you have is using this method does not allow for accountability. There is no way to track the license usage of the application with the bulk license distributed though the XML preferences. The reason the App store model is used is that there is an ability to track licenses so that if you own 100 licenses it will know that and stop at 100 licensed users and not allow lets say 250 users get the 100 licensed seats.

You will likely have to see if you can return the bulk license and use the app store, or use a different management channel to distribute your bulk licenses. There are other non MDM based OSX Management tools that may be able to accomplish this for you. But MDM is not the way to go here. Things like JAMF or in a smaller environment Apple Remote Desktop.

Thanks for your response. I am aware of all that and concur as we use jamf. I'm looking for a response from agilebits as to whether I can configure the license via a plist. If that is not possible I may pursue a license swap (not sure that is possible) as we can also use VPP. Our license predates our use of jamf/vpp.

    Thanks,
    Trevor

    Hi @tbaker,

While I know 1Password pretty well these days I can't say the same about JAMF or VPP, something I would say ErlicTheMad seems knowledgable about. What kind of control do these services offer for adding files to user profiles or system folders and is Composer the actual application you use? I see they have a user guide that I can look at to better understand but it would probably be best to ensure I'm reading up on the right software before continuing

    Hi @littlebobbytables,

No need to research any of the JAMF tools, I've got all that under control. :-) What I'd like to know is what happens under the covers when you click on the myCompany.onepassword-license file? I'm looking for a way to accomplish the same thing, either via a shell script, defaults write, plist snippet, etc.

    Thanks,
    Trevor

    Hello @tbaker,

I've sent you an email directly regarding this with something I hope will work.
