Launching an incorrect version of 1Password Mini

When I downloaded the 1Password installer and opened it, it placed 1Password 5 on my desktop. I proceeded with the rest of the install instructions which installed 1Password Mini. Then I moved the application to my Applications folder. Now when I launch 1Password 5, I get the following message:

The system launched an incorrect version of 1Password mini.

Instead of '/Applications/1Password 5.app/Contents/LoginItems' it started '~/Desktop/1Password 5.app/Contents/Library/LoginItems'.

If I dismiss this message, the desktop app opens and works as expected. However, I no longer have the 1Password installer on my desktop. Wondering how to change the launch point for 1Password Mini or resolve this message. Right now 1Password mini is blank looking.

1Password Version: 5.3.2
Extension Version: 4.4.3.90
OS Version: OS X 10.11

This message almost certainly means there is more than one copy of 1Password on your system. Is a copy still in your downloads folder, or perhaps in the trash. I had this trouble even from backup copies on external drives. Once I got rid of all the copies, except the one I ru from the Appleications folder, the problem resolved itself. I have excluded 1Password from my Time Machine and Carbon Copy Cloner backups.

The problem has to do with OS X searching too widely to seek out mini.

I did not have a copy of 1Password in my downloads folder or trash. But I deleted the files in those folders anyways. The problem still occurred. So then I restarted and it's working as expected now. It seems the issue has been cleared up.

    Hi @jtoy,

Due to caching in OS X I suspect there was still an active process that once lived in your Downloads folder or maybe OS X was doing something a little odd. I know recently I saved a file and Finder refused to show that it existed until I'd closed and reopens a few things - I never did discover why.

Just to let you know though, 1Password doesn't have an installer. What you download from our site is a ZIP file, an archived copy of 1Password that 1Password will extract into your Downloads folder if you run Safari. Rather than launching to install all you want to do is move that copy into your Applications folder and that takes care of both 1Password and 1Password mini which is a helper app that lives inside of 1Password.

Thankfully a restart got things working properly again

Thanks for the clarification littlebobbytables. After extracting the zip file (did not use Safari, and have downloads directed to the desktop) I opened the application first. In retrospect, sounds like I should've moved it to the Applications folder first and then opened it. Maybe then I would've avoided the issue I had. But everything happened so quickly I didn't realize what I had done until after.

And further looking back, which I had purchased the app from the Mac App Store, it seems like that would've been a way easier way to manage new versions and updates.

Thanks! It's still working as expected now.

    Hi @jtoy,

Can I just ask you to confirm that for me please. Did you purchase 1Password for Mac from Apple's Mac App Store? If you did then there is indeed a easier way and you shouldn't need to download 1Password from our site at all. I can help make sure you're all correctly set up if this is the case
