I'm never prompted to save a new login or password change

I just installed the Mac App Store version of 1Password and the Chrome and Safari extensions. I imported all of my login info from LastPass.

I changed a whole bunch of passwords for different sites, and I was never even once asked by 1Password if I wanted to save the new login information. Even when I created a new account on the Agile discussion site, I wasn't prompted to save a new login. I know how to recover from this, by editing the record manually and pasting in the new password or by manually creating a new login, but I was under the impression that 1Password would detect that I was changing a new password or creating a new login and offer to save it for me. This isn't happening.

Yes, I do have "Automatically ask to save new logins" enabled. I even toggled it off and back on again, and it didn't help.

  • Hey @captainslim! This is a known bug that we're currently working to resolve. We're hoping to get a fix out as soon as possible — I know it's a bit frustrating to add a few steps to changing your passwords.

In the meantime, a bit of a faster workaround to saving the password within the app is to manually save the login. To do this, simply fill the field using the Password Generator (or however you'd like), click the 1Password icon in your browser (whether that's Chrome or Safari), click the gear icon, and select Save new login. Then click the Update Existing tab, select your login, and click Update Existing to save the new password.

Let me know if that helps! :)

I just switched from LastPass as well after the recent news. I must say 1Password is very beautiful on Mac and it's easy to use. Importing my logins from LP was easy and everything works just great. Thank you.

  • @Proioxix Well, welcome to the community! I'm so glad everything has been seamless for you — that's our goal. :) Feel free to pop in here and let us know if you have any questions. We're around to help out.

@penderworth Thank you very much. :) I was just wondering if there was support for Yubikeys (couldn't find any info in the knowledge base) thanks.

    Greetings @Proioxix,

When you ask about support for Yubikeys I assume you mean as part of the process for unlocking your vault?

When you supply your Master Password what you're doing is you're decrypting your data in contrast to authenticating that you are who you say you are which is what 2FA is about. 2FA can be an extra layer of security when you need to authenticate yourself with a server but this breaks down when you have the data locally as you do in 1Password. All of the encryption uses standard libraries and well known algorithms so even if we added 2FA to the 1Password application it would be more a visual thing. To bypass all the bad person would need to do is copy your vault and use another program to try and discover the encryption keys. That's why all the important design decisions surround the encryption assume somebody is working on the data and not trying to gain access directly through the application. I'm sure you have some thoughts on this so please do reply if you do

    Hello @littlebobbytables,

Thank you very much for the response. I forget that 1Password data is stored locally. I was reading an article yesterday which talked about splitting the master password into two parts. One part the user remembers and the other (stronger part) is stored as static on a Yubikey. I'll give that a go I think. Thanks for the explanation, much appreciated.

Any updates @penderworth ? I am having the same issue, only for the last month or so, but it rarely prompts to save changes or new passwords. It does occasionally if I am already unlocked (entered the password). Anyway, thanks!

  • Hey @enjoydissonance,

Hmm, that's an interesting occurrence of this issue. Could you give us a bit more info?

    • What version of 1Password are you using?
    • What version of the extension are you using, and what browser?
    • Which version of OS X are you using?
    • Which websites has this happened on?

That'll help us track down the issue.
