New Logins Lack Username; Must Convert To Login When Editing The Data

After upgrading to v. 5.3 new logins created via the Safari extension lack the username. When I click the edit button and fiddle around a bit at some point a button appears allowing me to "change to a login." (Sorry that I cannot be more specific because I am unclear what is happening...) After clicking the button the username field magically appears and I can enter the necessary information.

In every case I have invoked the password generator, something I haven't tended to do in the past.

    Hi @MrMojoOne,

If you came from 1Password 3 then there will probably be a number of changes that might feel somewhat alien to how you were used to. I would hope most also still feels familiar though.

So, the Password Generator. When you use the Password Generator and you either copy or fill using one of the generated passwords we create a Password item in the background as part of the safety net. As you have discovered, you can manually convert a Password item into a Login item. As you've also discovered it lacks certain information but that's because 1Password created the Password item without consideration of where the password was being used.

There is another way of using the Password item that might appeal. Now there is also a bug that we need to address and I'll cover that here too.

Say you're registering with a new site and you use the Password Generator to fill the fields for the new Password. At this point we create the Password item. Now there is a bug where we should offer to save on this page but we don't. So you complete the registration process and you now want a working Login item. If you attempt to log back into the site manually 1Password should offer to save a new Login and what it will actually do is see that you have a Password item and perform the conversion as well as adding the other data such as your username. The bug crops up here again (we do really need to get this fixed) so if you fill using the Password item it won't ask but if you copy and paste the password 1Password will then behave as we always intended it to.

So the bug is an annoying one but the intention is if you try to log into a site 1Password will convert a Password item for you if it exists. Does the intended behaviour sound a bit better than the current workflow you're going through? As I say, if you copy and paste the password from the Password item 1Password should react as it is intended to. Hopefully this sounds a bit better.

Many thanks for the detailed explanation... I have only recently begun using 1Password to generate passwords and fill the fields. I noticed the bug that you mentioned. Until it is fixed I will switch to copy and paste when registering at a new website.

@MrMojoOne, on behalf of littlebobbytables, you're very welcome! Also, I apologize for the inconvenience with the bug he described. Until that bug is fixed, copying & pasting from the password generator to the password field(s) on the web form should help to avoid confusion.

Aside from that, I hope everything else is working well for you! If you have any questions, please let us know - we're always happy to help. :)

This is a huge bug that should be placed higher on the priority list.

For me (and other nerds) - it was easy to figure out that we need to convert to login and manually enter our username.

I will not recommend this product to other non-techies because it totally removes the ease of use.

    Hi @UFGrayMatter,

I'm so sorry you've also run into this bug! Yes, I absolutely agree that this needs to be fixed ASAP, and please know that it is indeed a very high priority for our developers. (In fact, a similar bug that happens when changing an existing website account password has already been fixed in the latest beta version of the extension.)

Please keep in mind that instead of clicking the 'Fill' button in the password generator, you can copy & paste the generated password from 1Password mini into the web form. When you submit the form, you should be prompted to save (or update) a Login item. The bug only happens when using the 'Fill' button. I mentioned this workaround earlier in this thread, but wanted to mention it again in case you find that easier than remembering to find the new Password item and convert it to a Login item.

Again, I apologize for the inconvenience! Please let us know if you have more questions about that or anything else. :)
