Master password prompt for certain logins

I just switched from LassPass to 1Password after they were purchased by LogMeIn. One of the features I liked to use in LastPass, is the ability to set certain logins to always prompt for my master password before it would autologin. I used this for some of my more sensitive logins such as financial services. I haven't been able to find this option in 1Password. Is this something that you support? If it isn't available, is it something you are planning on supporting in a future version?

Thanks!

    Hello @josten,

We've seen a couple of people mention this now, another thread recently can be found at this link. We don't currently have this feature and instead it's a combination of the Auto-lock settings in the Security tab of 1Password's preferences and the lock keyboard shortcut ⌃⌥⌘L although this completely locks the vault. We used to have something a little like this may years ago in 1Password for iOS but my understanding was it was more a concession to processing power than seen as a feature. As soon as processing power improved we stopped with the idea of high and low encryption.

So the situation at the moment is such a feature hasn't been on our radar and if or how fast such a feature could be added would be dependent on the typical factors in software development. What I can say is it wouldn't be seen in 1Password any time in the immediate future as we're at the stage of initial feature request. I don't know what the future will bring but hopefully it's absence right now isn't a deal breaker for you. I apologise that I can't say anything more concrete right now. It might be interest in this spikes though which from your perspective is positive as demand is one of the factors that is considered.

Am I correct in my understanding that this feature meant that any time you wanted to use a particular item you had to re-enter your Master Password, so in the 'right' contrived state you could be entering your Master Password multiple times in a short sequence but that's acceptable because that's what you want - is that a reasonable understanding?

Yes, that is correct. Here is my thinking. I don't always remember to lock my vault everytime I walk away from my computer for a few minutes. I have my settings set to automatically lock if my computer has been idle for a certain period of time but that still leaves my vault open if a friend or someone else has physical access to my computer when I am doing something else. Most of my logins aren't that sensitive, so if someone would get access to them it wouldn't be the end of the world. There are a few that are more sensitive such as my banking login.

Just like having a safe for more sensitive valuables even though you lock your doors, I would like to add another layer of protection for more sensitive logins. I only use these logins a few times a week, so having to type in my master password to use them is less obtrusive than setting my vault to lock after being idle for a minute or two. In my opinion, I think it is a good way to balance between convenience and security but I am always open to other ideas or suggestions.

On other thought. This could be accomplished if I could configure the lockout settings for each vault. I would create a vault for my sensitive logins that would lock more frequently than my "regular" vault. From what I have seen, the lockout settings are configured on a global level tied to each 1Password application but I haven't tried it out yet.

    Hi @josten,

Thanks for your feedback & suggestions about that! I can see why a feature like that might be helpful for you. As littlebobbytables said, we can certainly submit a feature request to our developers, although we can't say for sure if/when that would be added to 1Password. You're ideas are interesting, though! For now, I hope the auto-lock settings combined with the ⌃⌥⌘L keyboard shortcut to immediately lock 1Password will be somewhat helpful. Remember that the ⌃⌥⌘L shortcut works from anywhere on your Mac (you don't need to switch to 1Password first).

From what I have seen, the lockout settings are configured on a global level tied to each 1Password application but I haven't tried it out yet.

That's correct, the auto-lock settings are for the 1Password app in general, and can't be configured differently for each vault. However, in case it helps, it's possible to unlock a secondary vault while leaving the others locked. Normally, you would unlock your Primary vault, which also unlocks all your secondary vaults - but if you switch to a secondary vault before unlocking 1Password, you can unlock that secondary vault (using that vault's master password), and that will leave all your other vaults locked.

In the main 1Password app, you can switch to a secondary vault prior to unlocking by selecting 1Password > Switch to Vault. Or in 1Password mini, click the 1Password icon/image on the lock screen to select a secondary vault.

That's still not the same as the feature you asked about, but I wanted to mention it in case it helps. Thanks again for taking the time to share your thoughts about all that! If you need anything else, please don't hesitate to let us know. :)
