Hi there,

Is the vault format the same for 1Password 3 and 1Password 5? i.e. can both versions use and sync to the same database?

    Hi @malcolmP,

The vault formats are actually quite different but while that doesn't sound promising don't worry just yet!

In 1Password 3 your vault was stored in something called the Agile Keychain. We stored it in your Library folder or if you wanted to use Dropbox we move the Agile Keychain there and that was it. The Agile Keychain was your vault.

In 1Password 5 we moved to an encrypted SQLite database file. It allowed us to easily store multiple vaults and databases can be quite robust as well as have a good reputation for being quick to search  We don't store the encrypted SQLite database file in Dropbox though, instead we use the Agile Keychain to sync.

So 1Password 5 can read and write to the Agile Keychain. Indeed when you first move from 1Password 3 to 1Password 4/5, if you had both on the same copy of OS X then 1Password 5 will automatically import the contents of the 1Password 3 Agile Keychain into the new database file and then set up Folder Sync so it is constantly updating the same Agile Keychain going forward.

    Does that help at all?

Yes, I think so... :-) Thanks for your prompt response. I need to buy an upgrade for one Mac but still want to sync with an older Mac which I can't upgrade to Yosemite. I have since noticed though that a version 5 licence code will also work with version 4, so maybe there won't be any problem after all. Many thanks for that, a very useful feature!

@malcolmP: Indeed! On behalf of lil bobby, you are most welcome! I will also add that if you can stick to 1Password 4 and later across all of your devices, you'll have a much better experience.

1Password 3 doesn't know about some of the changes in 1Password 4, so if you do sync with a Mac running 1Password 3, be sure to use it only as a reader — don't edit data there or it will cause some confusion. Cheers! :)
