upgrade from 1Password 3.8.22 to v.5 thou not yet installed
I have an iMac with El Capitan (OS X v. 10.11). Just bought 1P v. 5 though not installed yet. Going thru steps to 1st remove v. 3. Trying to remove the Safari extension. Made a test login, it shows up in the pulldown in Safari but I can't find it in the program. Instructions say to contact you. The instructions to send a diagnostic zip file do not include OS10.11 (only up to 10.10).
What next. This is pretty complicated (creat/send zip, remove v. 3 extension, then figure out how to uninstall v.3, then install v.5, ...) Do I have this right?
1Password Version: v.3.8.22
Extension Version: 3.9.20
OS Version: OS X 10.11
Sync Type: Dropbox

Just went ahead and installed 1P v.5. Now I have both 1P v. 3 and v. 5 on my computer. Seems to work fine though I haven't gotten the browser extensions yet (Safari, Firefox, Chrome). Feels like I should uninstall v.3 extension (and v. 3 itself?) 1st?

Hi @CharleyM,
I'm sorry you're having some trouble with the 1Password 3 extension while trying to upgrade to 1Password 5!
The 1Password 3 extension kept a separate copy of your data, so the upgrade steps have you create a new login with that extension to make sure all your latest data has been copied to the main 1Password 3 app before you delete the v3 extension. However, if you're positive that all your latest data was already in the 1Password 3 app, you can skip that step and simply delete the old extension.
It's not usually a problem to have the version 3 and version 5 apps installed at the same time. The upgrade steps have you delete the 1Password 3 app first just to avoid a rare issue that can happen.
So at this point, are you sure you have all your 1Password data in 1Password 5? If so, you can go ahead and delete the 1Password 3 app (don't use any app cleaning utilities) as well as the 1Password 3 extension. After that, you'll simply need to install the newer extension in your browser(s). Please let us know how it all goes and if you need more help with that. Thanks!

Hi @Drew_AG ,
I did everything @CharleyM explained in his post. I still have the 1Password 3 app and extension but I'm afraid to uninstall both and lose all my data. I have 1Password 5 up and running but with no extension for my browser. How can I be sure it's safe to delete 1P v3 and it's extension from my Macbook Pro OS X El Capitan?

Hi @one4daages,
Do you have all your 1Password data in 1Password 5? If so, you no longer need the 1Password 3 app or extension. When you move the 1Password 3 app, just make sure you don't use any app cleaning tools. Your data is not stored in the app, so your 1Password 3 data will remain on your Mac even after you delete the 1Password 3 app. Also, 1Password 5 stores its data separately from 1Password 3, so as long as all your data now shows up in 1Password 5, you would still have it there even if you deleted the 1Password 3 data from your Mac.
Does that help? Let us know how it goes and if you have more questions. Thanks!

Thanks for the help. I now have 1P5 up and running and all is well.
Except, I am also on an iMac with El Capitan. I am using Time Machine to back up to an external HD. Aside from the problems El Capitan apparently has allowing Time Machine to run regularly, today I restarted the iMac and I got a message that 1P5 loaded from the backup drive, not the iMac. I was directed to a link that told me to disconnect the drive when I boot up. Am I going to have to disconnect/reconnect every time I shut down and restart my Mac?

Hi @CharleyM,
You may prefer to exclude the 1Password app from your Time Machine backup. Here's Apple's support page explaining how to do that.
This won't exclude your data from backup, just the app itself, which you can always download again any time you need it from our website.
Another option would be to exclude the Time Machine copy of 1Password from Spotlight, as described by my teammate Penderworth here.
Either way should do the trick. Cheers!

Thanks. Great ideas. But I wonder, in Pendworth's description he says OSX is trained not to search on Time Machine drives. I think that's exactly what mine did. ??
