Encrypted exports and imports

Are there any plans to add a feature for exporting your passwords as an encrypted file and importing them? We're trying to move from teampass to 1pass, but can not safely move our large batches of passwords with 1pass's current import options.

    Hi @frediy,

    Thanks for taking the time to ask us about that! I'm not very familiar with teampass, so to make sure I understand, are you saying it has a feature to export its data to an encrypted file format which can be supported & imported by other apps? And you would like 1Password to support importing data from that encrypted file format? If so, I can forward your request to our developers, although I can't make any promises as to if/when we would add that.

    On the other hand, if I misunderstood your question, please let us know. Thanks!

    @fredly,

    Can you describe what the concern is regarding importing your passwords into 1Password? Is it that you don't want them stored temporarily on a disk file while you are importing? Is it something else?

    @frediy: Indeed. By definition, 1Password wouldn't be able to read the encrypted data. That is, after all, the point of encryption. The only way for this to work would be for the developer to share their format, and of you to provide your password to decrypt it. Essentially it will have to get decrypted one way or another though.

    Instead, if you're concerned about the retention of plaintext, a feasible option would be to use whole-disk encryption on an external drive, have the exported plaintext written to the drive (which will then store it encrypted as part of its filesystem), import the data into 1Password, and then wipe the drive. Even without wiping, without the decryption key, the drive will appear to contain random noise. I hope this helps! :)
