1Password 3 to 1Password 5 on a new computer. Version 3 from Dropbox was not current

I recently purchased a new Mac, purchased the Apple store version of 1Password 5 and installed. My old Mac was running 1Password 3 and syncing to Dropbox - at least I thought it was. Turns out it was not, so the information imported from Dropbox to 1Password 5 is out of date. How can I fix this? Is there a way to force version 3 to sync to Dropbox (which I cannot figure out how to do) and then pull that data into version 5 on the new Mac? After looking through the topics on this site, I'm not finding help. Thanks.

1Password Version: 3.8.21 and 5.3
Extension Version: Not Provided
OS Version: OS X 10.7.5 and 10.10.5
Sync Type: Dropbox

  • Hey @rlumme! Dropbox sync can definitely be forced to sync on 1Password 3. Before you start, though, it's a good idea to manually back things up. To do this, open 1Password 3, click File in the menu bar, and select Backup Data File. Just save it somewhere safe.

Next, you can set up Dropbox sync by clicking 1Password in the menu bar and selecting Preferences. From there, make sure you're in the General tab and click Move to Dropbox. You'll be asked if you're sure you'd like to do this. Click Continue to proceed. The app will then create a backup of your data and move things to Dropbox. Wait until it's done syncing and head over to your new Mac.

From your new Mac, you'll need to add the data that you synced to Dropbox on your old Mac. If you already set up a vault, you can simply start over. Once you're back at the start screen, follow this guide to add your Dropbox data.

Let us know how everything goes! We'll be here to answer any questions you have. :)

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately save to Dropbox is grayed out. Perhaps because I previously was saving to Dropbox. However, after migrating my data to 1Password 5 I learned it had not been backing up. The data imported was quite old. Nothing new for maybe more than a year. What should I try now?
    Thx

  • @rlumme Thank you for the update on this. Since that button is greyed out, what does the path below the Data File section of that screen (the same one where you enable Dropbox sync in 1Password 3) read? Also, if you currently have Dropbox sync set up on your new Mac, there may be two Agile Keychain files inside Dropbox, which is not optimal. Could you check your new Mac to see where it's storing the file in Dropbox? You can do this by opening 1Password 5, clicking the 1Password menu, and selecting Preferences > Sync > Primary. In the right of the pane there should be a path where the file is located. Let us know what that is.

Thanks so much for the reply @penderworth. 1Password 5 is being backed up to icloud. Version 3 Data File reads: users > (my user name) > Dropbox > 1password.agilekeychain To my uneducated eye, that looks right, but what was imported by 1Password 5 was not up to date. If I was supposed to force periodic backups, I was not. And I don't see an option to do so now.

I'm wondering if there is a way to: 1) remove the Dropbox back up in version 3 and then re-sync to Dropbox so that the most current data is there, then 2) somehow force version 5 to pull from that again? Maybe I uninstall version 5 after 3 is updated and start all over again?

I really rely on 1Password and very much want to import all of the data stored on my old Mac. Thanks again for your patience and help.

  • @rlumme Thank you for getting back to me! :) It sounds like Dropbox may not be syncing on your old Mac. Could you try creating a simple text file in TextEdit, saving it to your Dropbox folder, and checking your other devices to see if it shows up there? If it doesn't, something in Dropbox is not configured correctly.

Now, if you want to continue using your old Mac with 1Password, there are some fixes we can try to get Dropbox back up and running. Let me know if that's the case. Otherwise, do you have a flash drive? If you're sure the 1Password.agilekeychain file on your old Mac is up to date, all you need to do is copy (don't move it, just in case you want to use your old Mac with 1Password later) that to a flash drive and import it on your new computer.

1Password 5 is being backed up to icloud.

So it sounds like you're syncing your new Mac's data with iCloud, even though it's not complete? Once you move the Agile Keychain file over from your old Mac, you can follow these steps to start over with 1Password on that computer and then add the Agile Keychain file data from your old Mac simply by double-clicking it.

That should help get things rolling. Of course, let us know if you have any questions at all. I'll be checking back on this post for a reply from you, so feel free to check in! :)

@penderworth, thanks again and sorry for the delay. No, Dropbox is not syncing to my old computer. The data in the 1password.agilekeychain file is out of date by more than a year (maybe even longer than that :-/. Is there anything I can do to make 1Password 3 sync to Dropbox and then push that update to the new computer running 1Password 5? Thanks again. Roxanne

  • @rlumme No problem! I'm glad you were able to reply here so we can keep working on this. :) If Dropbox is not currently syncing, we'll need to figure out why that is. Could you download the most recent version of their app over here? Once you've got it, install and launch it. See if it begins syncing again. You may need to sign in to your Dropbox account to get things up and running. Let me know how that goes!

@penderworth, I use Dropbox daily so I know it is working fine. Is there another way to jump start things? I use Dropbox (the paid version) for work and it's full of files. Thanks!

  • @rlumme You said that Dropbox isn't syncing on your old computer. The instructions I just provided were for that computer. ;) Could you try to get it up and running on there? The only reason I wanted to take this approach is in case you want to use your old computer with 1Password 3 in the future. If not, you can simply copy the Agile Keychain file to a flash drive and move it to your new computer. You'll need to start over and import the data using the guides mentioned in this post.

@penderworth, I looked at the agilekeychain file and it has not synced since 12/19/2013. Just an fyi. I should have clarified that I will want to continue to use 1Password 3 on the old computer as long as I can. Sorry if I misunderstood your instructions. Perhaps I'm a bit dense  but I'm not sure how to proceed.

  • @rlumme Okay that's good to know! Could you try to install the newest version of Dropbox on your old computer to see if that makes a difference with the syncing?

@penderworth, downloaded current version of Dropbox on old computer. Just not sure how to know if that solved it. BUT, I just re-read your earlier post and maybe I'm making this harder than I need to. If the hard drive file on my old Mac is up to date - which it is - then I can copy it to a thumb drive and install it on the new? Just now figuring out this is what you said and fear I've wasted your time. For some reason I thought it was the file from the Dropbox** website** you wanted me to copy. That's the one that is out of date.

  • @rlumme Sorry about the confusion there. Don't worry about the mixup, though. It's not too big of a deal.

You definitely don't want to download the copy from the Dropbox website — that'd be the old version. While you can copy things over using a flash drive, it doesn't solve the Dropbox syncing issue on your old computer. I was hoping to get that up and running for you as well so both computers would be smiling. Let me know if simply installing a new copy of Dropbox helps with that. You don't want to remove the folder, because that will get rid of your data on that computer. Just install the new app and see if that gets syncing up and running. We can go from there! :)

@penderworth, here's where things stand: After following the online - and your - instructions, I copied the current and accurate 1Password data from my old computer onto a thumb drive, moved all old 1Password data to the desktop of my new computer and then restarted. I opened 1Password 5 and it did prompt to begin again BUT, it said it detected old data from iCloud, which I did not want to import or I would have been back where I started. I could not figure out how to select what was on the thumb drive because it was grayed out. I finally just double clicked on the file on the thumb drive, but I now have two vaults: "Primary", which is empty, and "1Password Copy" which is full of all my current accurate data. Is there a way to transfer all the data to the primary vault? I've tried what I can, but nothing has worked. Many thanks! Roxanne

  • @rlumme We're very close now! :) You can definitely move those items to the Primary vault. Here's how:

    1. Select the 1Password Copy vault and make sure you are in the All Items view
    2. Select one of the items and use ⌘ A to select them all
    3. Right-click any of the items, hover over Share, select the Primary vault, and click Move
    4. Check the Primary vault to make sure everything is in there

Let us know how that goes!

@penderworth! You are brilliant! It worked and everything is now in the Primary vault. One final question about the app on the computer and I think we are all set: Knowing this sounds a little OCD-like, is there a way to delete '1Password Copy' from the app? Even though it's empty it is still there and I'd like to get rid of it. Probably silly, but there ya go :-)

And now, on to my iPhone app. I was not using it because it was synced via Dropbox so the data was old (as you know). In order to have it sync via iCloud and pull from 1Password 5 and the new computer, can I simply uninstall then reinstall it on my phone? Since my old Mac won't need to sync with any device going forward, I presume I can remove the Dropbox agilebits file thus ensuring the iPhone app cannot import that old data. Thanks!

  • Hey @rlumme,

    You are brilliant!

    Aww thanks. :)

There is indeed! Simply select the vault from the vaults menu in the top left of the window, click 1Password 5 in the menu bar, and select Delete 1Password Copy Vault. Make sure things are definitely moved first so you don't delete any precious data.

And now, on to my iPhone app. I was not using it because it was synced via Dropbox so the data was old (as you know). In order to have it sync via iCloud and pull from 1Password 5 and the new computer, can I simply uninstall then reinstall it on my phone?

So far it sounds like you're using the version of 1Password from the AgileBits Store, not the Mac App Store. That means only Dropbox, WiFi, and Folder Sync are your options. If you do have a copy of 1Password from the Mac App Store, you can begin syncing right away by heading to Preferences > Sync.

Whatever the case, you'll probably want to start over on your iPhone. This will give you a chance to sync all your data from scratch. Just make sure there aren't any extra items on your iPhone that aren't stored on your Mac. Let us know how this goes.
