Multiple 1Password accounts on one computer

Hello,

I purchased 1Password from the app store (my e-mail address) and use it between my desktop, macbook pro, iPhone, and iPad. It works flawlessly. We just purchased a new desktop yesterday, and my data migrated without a problem (I am using iCloud), but I am trying to set up 1Password for my wife, who has a completely separate account on the computer. In this circumstance, would she be able to sync with iCloud with her e-mail address, even though 1Password was purchased under my e-mail address? When I tried to set up syncing with iCloud using her e-mail address, it will not let me do it.

Thank you,

Rob

Is the copy running on your wife's account on that new machine from the Mac App Store? I ask because only that version can use iCloud for syncing. The one from the AgileBits web store can't, because Apple require any application the syncs via iCloud to be sold by Apple from one of their two App Stores.

Also, is you do have a copy from the Mac App Store, have you set up Family Sharing and included your wife in the family group? If you have, she should download her own copy on her own account under her own Apple ID.

  • Hey @rkoranda! The question that hawkmoth posed regarding whether you downloaded it from the Mac App Store or not is something I'd like to know the answer to as well. If you did simply re-download the app from the Mac App Store, what happens when you try syncing with iCloud? Are there any errors, or does the data simply not show up? We'll need a bit more information to figure out the issue. Hopefully we can tackle it quickly. :)

Hi there, and thank you to both of you for responding so quickly. Ok, so I purchased 1Password on my e-mail address a couple of months ago. When we set up our new iMac yesterday, I wanted to set up an account for her. Now, this is where it gets more confusing, and maybe you guys can clarify it for me. I registered her email address (.mac address) which is also her iTunes address, but when I tried to sync it to iCloud, it said that iCloud was not available. As I looked more into it, I realized that when my wife initially set up her e-mail with iCloud a couple of years ago, she used a .me as her primary address, and the .mac email is an alias to the .me email (and her iTunes email). we have not set up family sharing, but this is the next thing that I will try. Again, thank you so much for helping me resolve this issue, and I apologize in advance for the confusing explanation!

  • @rkoranda Thanks for clarifying things a bit more. I'll still need to know where you downloaded the app, though. If you're not sure, check your Applications folder on your wife's computer to see whether the app is titled "1Password" or "1Password 5". If it's the former, that's the Mac App Store version. Otherwise you're using the AgileBits Store version. iCloud sync is not available on the AgileBits Store version, so that would be causing the issue here and you'll just need to download the app from the Mac App Store to use iCloud.

If you're definitely running the Mac App Store version, could you please take a screenshot of the "iCloud not available" error and add it to your next post by dragging and dropping it into the text box? That will help us figure out what's going on.

    Hope that helps!

Ok, so I was able to get it all figured out. When I migrated my data, the old iMac had her old .me address linked ti iCloud instead of her current .mac address. I was using the 1Password app that I downloaded from my account through the Apple App Store. As soon as I signed out of iCloud and then signed back into iCloud with her .mac account, it then allowed me to sync her data with iCloud. I was able to do this without initiating Family Sharing. Thank you so much for your support!!!

Ahh, that makes sense. Thanks for the update! I'm glad to hear it's working for you. :chuffed:

In case it helps clarify thing for you or anyone else, while you can absolutely use Apple's Family Sharing to share the 1Password for Mac app purchased from the Mac App Store, it is not in any way possible to sync or share data between iCloud accounts; each has their own iCloud database which will be sync'd between devices logged into that same iCloud account. Cheers! :)
