Trying 1Pass 5… so ugly :(
Hello
Using 1password all along days I'm trying the version 5.
The interface is as ugly as the new Mac Os : everything is white and make it quite unusable…
On top of that my picture that I took time to put in each serial of software I keep, have disappeared for 90% living an ugly icon for Apps
The logo for the website are pixelized like on my ZX81 !
No more attached view of the website with the nice paperclip…
If I wasn't attracted by the multiple vault I won't even consider to buy this new version !
Why soft editor are following Apple in his search of the ugliest after having been the precursor of nice interface on computer ?
Please be kind with our eyes (the white everywhere is aggressive) and our mind (a bit of nice in this world of brute) just put a button in the preference to switch between : "yes I want it ugly like the OS" and "Please keep it nice like before" !
You don't imagine how many software I refuse to upgrade, only to keep them nice !
Is there a solution for the apps icon to be import ? for the picture of the box of the software ?

No way to import all my software's illustration of my 1Pass 3 into the new 1Pass 5 ?

Do I have to copy and paste each of my picture to find back a better looking presentation of my serial numbers ?

To migrate from 1Pass 3.8 to 5 do we have to loose all the configuration ?
Some of the software illustrations are still there (10%) the others are gone (90%)
Is there a format to respect ? A maximum size ?0 -
Are you speaking to yourself Ocelot ?

Yes I do, because no one of Agilebits care about your problem…

You may wish to know that the queue for answering forum posts by AgileBits support people works from oldest to newest, so each time you post again, you move back to the end of the line. If you are a bit more patient before posting things that don't further describe your issues, someone will be along to help, I'm sure.

Regarding your complaint about icons, have you turned on the option to use rich icons in the 1Password settings, under the General tab? If its already on, try turning it off and them back on.

Hello back to you, @Ocelot
Just a few thoughts from a fellow user for a many number of years now.
You can add your own custom icons from apps in your applications folder, just like you did in 1Password 3. Years ago in 1Password 3 they all came from the applications folder. Now the majority come from a server that AgileBits runs to store the icons for many different applications. (As @Hawkmoth mentioned above.) You can even retrieve copies of app icons that may no longer exist. This makes sure that you will always be able to have a copy of the app icon. Including ones that they optimize for the new version of 1Password.
That server is used in anonymity, by the end user. 1Password makes a call to it, sends the name of the application, if the server make a match it returns the stored application icon. That server provides the icons to many individuals, it does this to keep it private. By keeping things private, this assures that no one ever knows what software you may own or like. *See document below for privacy section.
An added benefit to the server is all version of 1Password can make a call to it. Windows, Mac, Android, iOS etc. This ensures that no matter where you are working on your information you are indeed able to get the image icons.
The name in 1Password needs to match the name the application goes by. For example 1Keyboard, is not the same as 1 Keyboard. To gain full functionality from the server you may need to adjust some of your naming conventions (if you manually entered some of the names). However with the vast majority of the people, this is not an issue, many have used the import methods previously available in 1Password 3 to actually input the license information. Those methods insured the proper naming of software licenses.
You can always elect to not use the server. It is purely an opt in only type of situation. If you decide not to use it, you can always manually set your own custom icons, which will be saved for later use inside your keychain. Your custom icons never leave your machine unless you use something like Dropbox. When using it, the icons are saved in the keychain to make them available to other copies of 1Password you may be running.
I once very closely curated my icons, however now the server has almost all of my license icons stored. I no longer have to keep such a close eye on it as 1Password does all the handy work. Ill admit it's really nice to flip the switch and watch the icons populate. No more hunting for the specific kind etc. Unless I want to go that route and add my own.
You upgraded to the new version, which changes a few things. Some things that we may take for granted as being stored in the keychain, might not have actually been written to the keychain when used by the older version. Or it was written to the keychain and now its in an incompatible format or unusable by 1Password. From being a long time user of 1Password since version 2, I can say I truly enjoy 1Password 5, it allows me to do all I need to. It allows me to get back to my other activities quicker. I hope and I think once you get use to the new version you will find it as useful as I do now.
If you wish to read the help docs on the subject see here. https://support.1password.com/privacy-rich-icons/ It includes Pros and Cons for the use of the rich icons. This also includes information about data collection questions, that you may have.
Personally, I do agree with you on the subject of so much white in the design. I have an eye condition that makes white wash out very harshly at time's. Its also why I sometimes I miss punctuation and spelling. This white make's text hard to read for me. I would really like to see a dark version for example. This makes my ability to see the details 100% better. Thats not evolved yet. But hopefully some day it will. So rest assured you are not alone. :chuffed: Currently 1Password only supports the current theme you see. That theme is generally developed by following similarities with the OS X version as Apple determines the UI elements in each new version of OS X.

Thanks for your answers.
If I get it right 1Password5 isn't able to bring my icons of Apps I used to copy and paste in version 3.5 ?
It is designed to find itself icon of my Apps but I have to find out the name they are using for my Apps !
Is it a new game included in 1Password 5 ?
I can't tell you the mess when you buy a software not in his english version (sorry I'm french…)
Perhaps I misused the Soft part of 1Password ?
I entered even the software my boys bought (games for sure…) and I copy and paste illustration of the software.
Some names change from english to french, so 1Password will never find it…
That explain that the 10% icon still in my database are really new software. Is it really impossible to import my illustration from 1Pass3 to 1Pass5 directly ?
I'll have to copy and past each one ?For the design I agree with you the white everywhere is very very aggressive for eyes.
I think Apple and soft editor will have trial about cecity in the future…
Should be so easy to propose two version in preference panel…0 -
Hello @Ocelot,
While 1Password will query the server for an icon, if an item contains a custom icon already set we don't - we will always favour the user's image which is stored inside the item or at least this has been my experience so far. This is what allows 1Password for iOS to display the custom icons that I set from inside 1Password for Mac.
If you were to turn off Rich Icons you should be able to see what items have custom icons and which don't. When it comes to software we will be performing a simple text comparison so I suspect it would require the English title to use the Rich Icon although I can see one trick that you could use.
- Use the English name for the Software Licence item so that the rich icon is visible.
- Edit the item, select the icon and use
⌘C
to copy and then⌘V
to paste. - Use the French name for the Software Licence item and save.
It will now display the Rich Icon permanently as you've now set it as a custom icon. It might help in a few cases or you may feel it doesn't help at all. I just thought I would mention it as something I could observe.

Is it to say that I have to uncheck "use rich icons" to find back the icons I paste in 1Pass 3 ?
Please give us back a nice look of your cool App.
One usable without becoming blind !Thanks for your answer

Hi @Ocelot,
I'm sorry the rich icons haven't been working as expected for you!
Is it to say that I have to uncheck "use rich icons" to find back the icons I paste in 1Pass 3 ?
That was just a suggestion from littlebobbytables in case you want to check which items have custom icons, and which items do not. When you disable Rich Icons, most items will likely show a default/generic icon for that type of item. It sounds like some of your items will still have their own custom icons, and those are the ones which you have added yourself. When you re-enable Rich Icons, 1Password will go through the items that don't have custom icons and try to download them from our image server, if it can find a match. Unfortunately, it sounds like it's having trouble finding a match for some.
Thank you for your feedback about the visual appearance of version 5! I'm sorry you don't like it as much as version 3, but I can let our developers know about your comments. Perhaps they will be able to make improvements to that in the future. If you need anything else, please let us know - we're always happy to help! :)

To be true it's 90% that wasn't found on your server and moreover have lost the icon I paste in 1Pass3
Do I have to paste again my 30 icons one by one ?
Is there a chance to find them back by recalling the whole import of 1Pass3 ?Thank you for your feedback about the visual appearance of version 5! I'm sorry you don't like it as much as version 3, but I can let our developers know about your comments. Perhaps they will be able to make improvements to that in the future.
Please don't let them make improvements just ask them to add the possibility to keep a usable and nice look (1Pass3) or change for the all white flat blinding version of 1Pass5 (for the masochist).
Thanks for your help

Hi @Ocelot,
I'm sorry for the delay in getting back to you about this!
I'm not quite sure why upgrading from version 3 to version 5 would have retained some of your custom icons but not others, so I'd like to get a few more details from you, and hopefully that will help us to figure out what's going on. Can you please let us know the following:
- Are 1Password 3 and 5 installed on different Macs, or are they both on the same Mac?
- Do you still have 1Password 3 installed, and does it still show all of the custom icons?
- What version of Mac OS X are you running? (If you're using more than one Mac, please let us know the version of OS X on each one.)
- What exact version of the 1Password 5 app is installed on your Mac(s)?
- What exact version of the 1Password 3 app is installed on your Mac(s)?
- Are you using the AgileBits Store version or the Mac App Store version of 1Password 5?
- How did you get your data from 1Password 3 to 1Password 5 (for example: Dropbox sync, export/import, using a backup file, something else)?
- What steps did you take to add custom icons to items in 1Password 3?
The more details you can give us, the better. Thanks in advance! :)

Thanks for your answers :
- installed on same Mac
- 1Pass still there still has the icons
- Yosemite
- 3.8.22 and 5.3.2
- Agilebits store version
- import from export of all my files from 3,8
- in 1Pass 3.8 I copy and paste the icon by selecting the generic icon
I tried a new import : idem.
In the export file from 3.8 there is several files with my icons in .Png
I took my time and import them one by one…
I hope I won't have to do so at each new version I try ?0 -
Hi @Ocelot,
Thanks for getting back to us with those details. I've tried to read through the thread, but I may have missed a few pieces along the way, so forgive me if I'm asking something that has already been answered.
I'm curious about why you're using the export and import feature to get your data into 1Password 5. Ideally, when you open 1Password 5 for the first time, it should detect your data file and simply prompt you for your Master Password. If I recall correctly, that should pull in your database, including the custom icons you've chosen.

It seems that 1Pass5 didn't find my database on the first launching…

Hi @Ocelot,
Thanks for the information! It's strange that 1Password 5 wasn't able to find your 1Password 3 data the first time you opened it. I don't know if using export/import to get your data to version 5 had anything to do with the missing custom icons. It's possible that using another method to transfer your data (like Dropbox sync, Folder sync, backup files from version 3, etc) would have worked better, although I don't know that for sure. I would suggest trying one of those options, but it sounds like you may not need to do that:
I took my time and import them one by one…
Do you mean that you re-added all the custom icons? If so, I'm glad that's all settled now, but sorry you had to do that one by one.
I hope I won't have to do so at each new version I try ?
No, you shouldn't need to do that with each new version. As I mentioned, I don't know exactly why the problem happened at all, but it could have something to do with the differences between versions 3 and 5. When we released 1Password 4 for Mac, it was a completely new app, re-built from the ground up (and 1Password 5 is an updated version of 1Password 4). Version 5 should be compatible with the data from version 3, but maybe that had something to do with what happened to many of your custom icons. I haven't heard of this problem happening to other customers though, so that's really just speculation.
Hopefully you're all set now, but if you have more questions or need anything else, just let us know. :)

Is it possible to keep 1 password3 on one of my Mac that doesn't goes over 10.6.8 and to synchronise it as one vault of the second Mac under 1Pass5 ?

@Ocelot: Yes...but be sure to not make changes in 1Password 3 if you're going to be sucking the data with 1Password 5, as that could result in some confusion since 1Password 3 does not know how to read (or write) some data from the newer versions. So it would be best to use it as a 'reader'. I hope this helps! :)
