I just purchased 1password from the Agile bits site on my mac, but when I tried to sync to my iphone, I found I already had a previous version I never used on my phone. I don't know the master password, or the license. I want to be able to sync everything over icloud if possible. Please help.

If you want to use iCloud, your license must be sold by Apple from the Mac App Store. Apple's current policy prevents applications they don't sell themselves from one of their two App Stores from having access to the protocols needed to sync through iCloud. The version from the AgileBits web store, which you say you just purchased, can't offer iCloud for syncing for that reason.

There is no difference in security between iCloud and Dropbox. Your strong master password and the encryption system are the only real security for your data. That security does not depend in any way on which cloud solution you use. Dropbox also has some extra advantages. If you want to use more than one vault, only Dropbox can sync all of them. iCloud can only sync the Primary vault. Also, if you want to share data among family members or coworkers, you can't do that with iCloud either, but you can do so with Dropbox. And if you keep the AgileBits version, you will get a generous discount when the next paid upgrade comes around. At Apple, there is no method for developers to offer discounts for previous users; everyone pays the same price.

Now, if you do want access to iCloud, and if you bought your license from AgileBits within the past 30 days, they will issue a refund, and you can then go to the Mac App Store to buy a license there. It seems that you should qualify for that refund if you want it. If you bought it with the same email address you used to register for the forum, someone should be along in due course to confirm your wish and issue the refund. If you didn't use the same email, the process is different, so let us know if that is the case and we can give you further directions.

As far as your iOS version is concerned, you have not said what version you have. Is it the most recent release, 6.0.1? You can't tell by scrolling to the bottom of the settings menu within 1Password. (But I guess only if you can open the application.) If you can't open your iOS installation, you can tell what version you have by checking your iTunes account and finding 1Password. If you do have the current version, and you don't know the master password and don't have any data there to preserve, just delete the application from your device and download a fresh copy from the iTunes App Store under the same Apple ID you used to download it before. If you have an older version, you can get version 6 for free in its basic form, if you have iOS 9 installed. If you want the more advanced Pro features, they are activated with an in-app purchase. If you earlier copy was version 4 or 5, those Pro features will be activated without additional expense, as long as you use the same Apple ID you used to download the old copy.

I have ios version 5.1 on my phone. It was purchased with a different email address. If I don't know the master password, does that make the software useless?

The only place you could have purchased the iOS version would have been through the iTunes App Store, and that purchase would have been tied to the Apple ID you used to buy it.

I don't know what version you may have, given that you are so far behind the most recent update to iOS, which is now version 9.0.2. I'm not sure how far back 1Password can go and still be able to sync to the Mac version you just bought.

I'm going to have to defer to someone with more historical knowledge than I have. I'll pass a link on to this thread.

  • @debheller19 - I don't see a purchase from you from our store. As @hawkmoth has said, if you want to sync using iCloud you will need to purchase from the Mac App Store. Could you email us at support+forum@agilebits.com and we can help you more with this. Thanks!
