5.4 release note for "sync on a network drive"
The release notes for v 5.4 include this Improvement:
"If you attempt to enable sync on a network drive, 1Password will now warn you. {OPM-1814}"
What exactly does this mean? I rely on network sync, and 5.3 provides warnings if my computer can't find the network (albeit with a very ungraceful method to fix the issue).
Is 1Password now disallowing (or discouraging) syncing to a networked drive?
1Password Version: 5.3.2
Extension Version: Not Provided
OS Version: OX X 10.10.5
Sync Type: local or as networked drive

Greetings @syncrasy,
It's the very ungraceful method to fix that is why we discourage syncing directly to a network share. We did look into improving this but we get nice clear notifications when somebody disconnects an external storage device that we don't with a network share. As a result we end up in this very inelegant situation which can have a real impact on being able to unlock the vault because we always query the sync location if it's set up. We want to do this before we present the vault so the user isn't using an old vault for no good reason.
So nothing in how you understand 1Password behaves has really changed, we're just hoping to discourage people from using it so we don't end up in a less than ideal situation. If you wish to continue you are free to do so.
Does that help at all?

Yes, that helps. Discouraging the practice but not disallowing it. Of course, I'd still like Agilebits to devise a more graceful method for letting users respond to a network disconnect (per my other thread), but I'm glad that I can still use my method.
Thanks!

Hi @syncrasy,
I too hope we can come up with something more graceful but I don't know what it will entail. Hopefully one day!

Thanks. If it's possible to show the Ignore/Fix notification sooner and more predictably (i.e., before and/or instead of the generic "can't find network drive" popup), that would help immensely. Right now the Ignore/Fix notification appears apparently randomly, and only after dozens and dozens of appearances of the generic popup.

Hello @syncrasy,
I think some of this will depend on OS X as I've even managed to completely lock up Finder when I last tried to test this area. There must be a more elegant way of handling it though or at least we have to hope there is.
I remember part of the testing involved me disabling Wi-Fi otherwise OS X would have simply reconnected to the share. Things stopped working really badly and I think I gave up and rebooted the Mac it was so unresponsive. I do not recommend trying to recreate.

I just had my first encounter with the new message of discouragement. It has two buttons: Continue Anyway and Learn More....
Clicking Learn More... sent me to a blank web page (404 error):

Hi @syncrasy,
I'm very sorry about that! Thanks for letting us know, I will let someone here know about that. I believe it is supposed to redirect to this section of the user guide, at least for now: Folder Sync
Thanks again for taking the time to report that. If you need anything else, please let us know! :)
