Can I delete 1Password Keychain folder in my "Documents" folder?

Currently using version 5.3.2. I've upgraded multiple times from old versions.
The 1Password Keychain folder contains, 1Password 2013-XX-XXXX.agilekeychain.zip and 1PAssword.agilekychain files.
How can I determine if these are previous backups that I can safely delete so I dont leave copies lying around on my Mac OSX 10.10.
Thank you,

    Hi @suri,

When you refer to "The 1Password Keychain folder," do you mean in Dropbox? 1Password 5 for Mac stores your data locally on your Mac in an .sqlite file, so you won't lose anything by deleting an .agilekeychain sync container from Dropbox. If you're looking to clean things up so you only have one, current .agilekeychain file in Dropbox, here's what I recommend:

    • First go to 1Password > Preferences... > Backup and click "Backup now" just to be extra cautious.
    • In 1Password > Preferences... > Sync, set it to sync vault with "None" in the dropdown menu. Disable sync on all connected devices (if any).
    • In your Dropbox folder, feel free to delete any and all 1Password files.
    • Back in 1Password > Preferences... > Sync, set it to sync vault with Dropbox. It will create a fresh new .agilekeychain file for you, which you can use to re-enable Dropbox sync on all connected devices (again, if any).

Let us know how it goes for you! And we'll be here if you have any other questions. Cheers!

Thank you Vee. Let me clarify.
The "1Password Keychain" folder is not in Dropbox. It's in my hard drive in "Documents" folder. When I click to Preferences > Sync, looks like my Primary Vault is sync with the same "1Password Keychain" folder.
When I click to Preferences > Backup > Show Files, looks like it is also backup to "Backups" folder in "Library>ApplicationSupport>1Password4>Backups.
    My questions are
    (1) what is the difference between agilekeychain files and XXX.1p4.zip backup files ?
    (2) can I delete the "1Password Keychain" folder in my "Documents" folder and just rely on the 1p4.zip backup files?

    Thanks,
    suri

    Hi @suri,

So the big difference is that the Agile Keychain is to allow multiple copies of 1Password to synchronise their local copies of your vault. The Agile Keychain was once your vault back in 1Password 3 but in 1Password 4 we replaced it with an encrypted SQLite data base file that stores not just your primary vault but any secondary vaults too. Each backup is a snapshot of this database and zipped to reduce the space required. As we maintain a number of backups as visible by the list it allows you to return to any previous point in time that you have a backup for while the sync container is only ever a copy of your vault as it now stands.

So you're free to delete any Agile Keychains you have in your Documents folder unless you have good reason to keep them. Unless one of them is the target of syncing though they will actually be an out of date copy of your vault. In this case deleting them will help keep you straight so that you don't think it can be relied on.

Now 1Password only backs up your vaults locally so a backup of your drive is never a bad thing. Some people use Time Machine which comes with OS X, some people use an application that clones your entire drive e.g. SuperDuper! but either way what it means is you have a backup of your entire drive should anything happen to the Mac.

Hopefully that helps but if it doesn't clear everything up please do say.
