Finding/saving 1PW data file from dying iMac?; updating versions on Mac and iPhone?

I need help on several fronts:

  1. I have a dying iMac from which I'm trying to find my 1PW data file, just in case there are any issues when I restore all my Time-Machine backup files to the new iMac I've got on order. What further complicates things is that I have been running 1PW v3.8.22 (which I kept there because it seemed to be the latest version that would work with my Mac's OSX10.6.8, which I had to keep at that level to accommodate some out-of-print software), so I'm fairly certain that the new iMac's OS (OSX10.11, El Capitan) will not run that older version of 1Password. So I'll need to upgrade, or quite likely have to buy (since my version so old, it might be beyond the upgrade limit). I do have the code key, the order #, purchase date, etc., if that helps. The "About" window for the 1Password application does not say "Mac App Store" under version number, but it doesn't say "AgileBits, Inc." either. It was bought on 11/19/09, so maybe that was before the App store option.
  2. My old iMac (OS10.6.8) is in its final moments -- I can barely resuscitate it to get information from it -- but I do have a full Time Machine backup, as I've mentioned. However, I cannot find the 1PW data file in the Library/Application Support folder (see the screen shot attached). Given the information above, can you tell me where to find the 1PW data file, knowing I don't have many more shots at finding it before the old iMac gives up completely.
  3. I also have 1Password on my iPhone (iOS9), and it has the contents of the iMac 1Password synced to it. Perhaps that can be used to populate the new version of 1Password I will be getting for my new iMac? I'm having trouble following the sequences outlined on your support threads as to how to upgrade, etc., and as you can see, my situation has a number of unwieldy variables, so and need a simpler answer. But most of all, I don't want to lose the 6+ years of passwords stored on my 1Password devices.
  4. My iPhone's (iOS9) version of 1PasswordPro is also outdated at v3.7.2. I actually bought v5.1.2 about a year ago, but later found out that it wouldn't work with my older desktop version 3.8.22 on my iMac (OSX10.6.8) discussed above, so I never activated it. I understand from a recent Dave Teare newsletter that 1Password 6 is now available for iOS9, so perhaps upgrading my iPhone's version will be as simple as activating my v5.1.2, and then performing an update. Please confirm. However, I'm concerned that my only verified access to my many passwords is currently on my iPhone and is v3.7.2. Before upgrading the iPhone, I believe it would be wise to make sure the new iMac's version of 1Password is fully installed, working, and populated with all my passwords -- either from a recovered 1Password data file(s) (for which I'll need your help locating), or as sync from my iPhone as it currently stands running the 1PasswordPro v3.7.2. If it is the latter, I need to be absolutely sure that the sync will be going FROM my iPhone TO my new iMac, as I don't want to overwrite my iPhone's passwords.
  5. Lastly, I'll be wanting to be access 1Password's Pro features as I've always felt limited by the stock fields 1Password offered in my older version. I grew very used to creating my own form fields in my previous password program, but that software company went out of business. Anyway, I understand the Pro version is an additional upgrade (and cost) on the iOS platform, and another additional upgrade (and cost) on the iMac platform. Whatever. If it does what I want it to do, I'll pay for it. However, I don't see on your site the offer for the Pro version upgrade for the iMac platform. Does it exist, and if so, can you direct me to it? These Pro upgrades will be the last step in all of what I need to do, but I'm citing it now, in case it affects the advice you may give me.

Thanks!

    Hi @designruler,

I believe I should be able to help on all fronts

    1. 1Password 3 for Mac hasn't been worked on a for a while now and we are aware of incompatibilities with El Capitan. It will mean a paid upgrade I'm afraid but if you use your existing licence key for 1Password 3 at Upgrades for Existing Licence Owners you can pick 1Password 5 for Mac up at a healthy discount. Now we also sell 1Password for Mac in Apple's Mac App Store where we can't offer a discount. This typically leaves people with a choice to make, a discounted price for 1Password for Mac but no support for iCloud Sync or paying full price for iCloud Sync as only the Mac App Store version can do this (restrictions in place by Apple). We have a sale on at the moment though where you can pick even the Mac App Store version up for 40% which is almost what you would pay for the upgrade. This is really a personal preference thing, if you don't care about iCloud the AgileBits Store is fine, if you're unsure I'd say grab the Mac App Store version during the sale to cover your bases.
    2. More importantly though is your vault. I think the reason you can't find your vault is that the path that you're currently view is /Library/Application Support/. This is the Library folder for OS X rather than your personal Library folder that each user account in OS X has. The subtle difference is with the ~. The real path is ~/Library/Application Support/ and the difference is when OS X sees ~ it replaces that with /Users/xxxx/ where xxxx is the name of your account. Let's use my account as an example, if my OS X user account is called LittleBobbyTables then ~/Library/Application Support/ translates to /Users/LittleBobbyTables/Library/Application Support/. That should help you find the 1Password folder and more importantly the 1Password.agilekeychain that is your vault. Copy the entire 1Password folder though to an external disk to avoid any risk.
    3. At the moment you'll be performing a Wi-Fi Sync given you're using 1Password 3 on both your Mac and iOS device. What you will need to decide is how do you want to sync going forward? Both versions can sync either by Dropbox or Wi-Fi and the Mac App Store version can also sync by iCloud. Given you'll be replacing 1Password 3 on both platforms I think the best approach is to get your Mac set up using the 1Password.agilekeychain from above and then make a clean start on 1Password 6 for iOS using the data on your new Mac. We'll concentrate on the Mac first then get the iOS device set up.
    4. There is no Pro version of 1Password for Mac. The reason we have the Pro version on iOS is we've adopted a freemium model there where you can certain features for free with no request for any payment ever. If you find value in it or desire the additional features a one-off payment unlocks them all. On the Mac we just ask you to pay for the software once if you want to use it - the more traditional approach - no chancing attempts to extract more cash here.

So, how to get your 1Password 3 data into 1Password 5?

There are a few routes but I think this one will be the easiest.

    1. Open a Finder window on the new Mac.
    2. Use the keyboard shortcut ⇧⌘G to open a Go to Folder... window and paste in the following path ~/Library/Application Support/ and click the Go button.
    3. Copy the 1Password folder from above into your new Application Support folder.

When you launch 1Password 5 for the first time it will check a number of locations for existing data including the default locations as used by 1Password 3. It will find the data and migrate it into the new vault container which is an encrypted SQLite database file. 1Password will simply ask you for your existing Master Password and you should find your vault as you knew it on your old Mac. Once you're happy this has happened you then need to decide how you would like to sync with your iOS device and we can help get the iOS device all set up

If you have any questions at all please ask.

Thank you so much for your response and advice. Using your instructions, I was able to locate my 1Password folder -- complete with the keychain, etc. -- and I've backed it up to an external drive as you recommended. My new iMac has yet to arrive, and once it does, I will use your advice regarding the sequence of steps in order to get the latest versions of 1Password (v5.4) running on my iMac and on my iPhone (which will be 1Password v6.02 for iOS). Here is the plan regarding my iMac portion (please confirm):
    1. Once I get and set up my iMac with it's basic software and file transfer from my old iMac's backup via Time Machine, I'll place my 1Password folder in the ~/Library/Application Support folder. (Please see question #3 below about whether I need to get old 1Password versions off my iMac first).
    2. I'll install and launch 1Password v5.4, and it will automatically locate the 1Password folder.
    3. I will enter my 1Password general password when prompted, and I'm good to go on the iMac side.

    Questions:
    1. I will buy the Mac App Store version because, as you indicated, I will be able to use that version to back up using iCloud. As I said, my iMac hasn't arrived yet, but I don't want to miss the current discounted price at the Mac App Store. I believe the iMac will come in the next 10 days, but will the sale still be going on for awhile (into November)? Or, can I just buy it now and download it later?
    2. Once I get 1Password v5.4 up and running on my iMac and linked to my 1Password folder in my ~/Library/Application Support folder, what do I need to do to get it to sync using iCloud? And once that is accomplished, where will the 1Password folder be located, in case I want to back that up on an external disk in the future?
    3. Should I get rid of old versions of 1Password on my iMac? When I first start up the new iMac, I'm going to use my last Time Machine backup to move all my files to it (which will probably put that fore-mentioned 1Password folder where it needs to go -- but I've got the backup just in case), so my old version of 1Password 3.8.22 will still be there. Should I get rid of that before the new 1Password 5.4 installation? If so, how is that accomplished?

Regarding my iPhone and upgrading it from v3.7.2 to v6.02, what do you suggest regarding steps to upgrade the iPhone's version? Delete the old version entirely from my iPhone, then, 2) download the new v6.02 (and I'm going to get the Pro upgrade), then, 3) do a sync from my iMac's new v5.4? Or should I do that from the iCloud? If the latter, how do I do that?

    Thanks!

@designruler: I would buy it now and install it on your new Mac once it comes. I'm not entirely certain when the sale will be ending, but given that there's no guarantee when the new Mac will arrive anything can happen.

1Password Preferences > Sync, and then select iCloud from the vault's dropdown menu. You'll find the Mac App Store versions' support files here: ~/Library/Containers/2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword-osx-helper/

    1. Should I get rid of old versions of 1Password on my iMac? Should I get rid of that before the new 1Password 5.4 installation? If so, how is that accomplished?

Once you have 1Password 5 installed and your data in the vault there, you can simply drag the old version of the app to the Trash.

Or should I do that from the iCloud? If the latter, how do I do that?

If you don't have data in 1Password 3.7.2 that you need (for example, you already have it all on your Mac), you can safely delete the app. Otherwise, when you install 1Password 6, it can migrate your data from the old version. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions! :)

OK, I finally got my new iMac, but I can no longer seem to find that ~Library/Application Support folder in my Users folder as you instructed me to. Is it the new OS I'm running (OSX10.11.1), and maybe they've moved that folder? I can see it on my son's iMac (where I temporarily migrated my files to under another account while waiting for my new iMac) and it is running OS10.6.8 (like my old iMac did). I'm attaching a screen shot of the expanded "Users" folder on my new iMac to show you the lack of the ~Library/Application Support folder. My plan was to drop my 1Password data folder in there, buy the new 1Password5.4 from the MacApp Store, and direct it to that folder when I did the install. What should I do now?

Perhaps this has something to do with my new iMac and iCloud, though 1Password isn't listed in my System Preferences/iCloud as one of the applications using it. When I migrated all my data from my old iMac to my new iMac using a TimeMachine backup, one of the messages I received from the new iMac after the transfer was a listing of software that was incompatible with this Mac, and one of those listed was 1Password. I wasn't surprised, as the version on that backup was v3.8.22, and your people said to me earlier that it is known to have issues with El Capitan. However, it is strange that the ~Library/Application Support folder is no longer where it was before on my iMac running 10.6.8, and what is stranger still is that when I started up my old version of 1Password (which was still transferred with the migration, even though the iMac told me it was incompatible), it actually started up (asking me if I wanted to update to version 4, actually, at which I said no, as I intend on just buying v5 as I mentioned). So the data file has to be somewhere on the hard drive (or is it now in the iCloud or something?) I'd like to buy the new 1Password version 5 and use my previous data files, as I mentioned (and the data files are safely on a thumb drive for transfer to the new iMac), and would like to please know the steps in order to do so.

    Can you please help? Thanks!

OK, I finally got my new iMac, but I can no longer seem to find that ~Library/Application Support folder in my Users folder as you instructed me to.

@designruler: Sorry for the confusion! This is hidden (in Yosemite and above, I believe). In Finder you can press ⌘ ⇧ G (Command Shift G) to open the location directly.

Thanks! I found the Application Support folder just as you said. However, upon going to the App Store to finally buy the new application there, I found the price has jumped to $49 (up $20) from where it was last week. Any chance on a discount or something, even if buying through the Apple Store? I want to be able to sync via iCloud, so I understand that I need to buy it through the App Store, and not the Agile site. Sorry about the request, and I know I didn't act fast enough, but I was trying to iron all these problems out first (with Agile's very helpful staff, of course). Please let me know.

    Thanks again.

    Hi @designruler,

Alas, our sale just ended so it's back to the regular price, as you've noticed. In our own AgileBits Store we have a bit more flexibility with coupons and such, but unfortunately we just don't have a way to give discounts through the Mac App Store other than the occasional sale (and this one lasted a lot longer than most of our sales do). So sorry that you missed it!

OK. I understand. I think the software is worth it, so I bought it for the $50.00. it seems to be working well. I also downloaded the iOS version for my iPhone 6, which also seems to be working nicely. And both are now syncing across iCloud. One more question: Where can I find the license/registration number for the 1Password v5.4 on my iMac (running 10.11.1)? I like to keep a record of all purchased software, especially when it comes time for upgrades. Speaking of purchased software, as I said, I then downloaded the iOS v6.0.2, which seemed to be free from the App Store. I thought there was some sort of paid-upgrade for the Pro Features, but my Settings window says, under Settings/Pro Features, "Thank you for buying 1Password's Pro Features, you're awesome!" with a big green "Purchased" stamp below it, followed by some illustrated descriptions of the features ("More Categories", and so on). I guess I might have inadvertently clicked some sort of "Pro" option at the App store, but I didn't think so. Anything you might know that can clear that up? Also, is there a place I can see the license/registration number for the iOS version too (seeing as I somehow purchased the Pro version)? Where would I find that on the iOS device, and again, how would I find that information on my iMac as well? Thanks!

The App Store(s) don't have licences, apps are tied to your Apple ID. At some point, probably not immediately, you will get an email from Apple with a receipt for any purchases.

It seems likely that the Pro version came free because of an earlier purchased version.

@designruler: Indeed. Since there is no license with App Store purchases, we're also happy to provide one for you, should you need it (for example, if you wanted to use the AgileBits Store version, perhaps for an older Mac).

I'll try to clarify the Pro Features situation, but be sure to ask any followup questions you might have. Essentially, the 1Password for iOS app in the App Store today, currently version 6, is the "same" app (as far as the App Store is concerned) as 1Password 4 and 5 before it. As such, if you purchased 1Password 4 (a paid app) or the Pro upgrade in 1Password 5 (which was at the first to use the 'freemium' model), then you're 'grandfathered in' to Pro in 1Password 6. :)
