After purchasing a license for 1password v4 in November 2014 from Agile directly...

1password v4, bought from Agile directly. Now I want to upgrade to v5 for iCloud sync, I understand I have to get from App Store, but it wants me to pay again. How can I get v5 without having to re-purchase? I don't see anything on the website about this.

Thanks...

Since Apple provides no way for developers to transfer licenses to the App Store and doesn't permit discounting for individuals, the only way you can get access to iCloud for syncing is to buy a copy of 1Password from the Mac App Store, if iCloud is worth the extra cost to you. For individuals who have purchased a license from AgileBits within the last 30 days, AgileBits will issue a refund, but your purchase is well past that window.

I know that cloud solutions are a matter of personal preference, but iCloud is no more secure than Dropbox. The security comes entirely from your strong master password and the encryption used by the application. Posting your vault on a public forum would be just as safe, not that I recommend that. Also be sure you know that with iCloud there is no way to sync vaults other than your primary one, and there is also no way to share data among users with different Apple IDs. Both of those options work well with Dropbox.

Your AgileBits license will also net you an attractive upgrade discount when the next paid upgrade comes along. Apple doesn't provide developers any way to offer upgrade discounts. Paid upgrades cost the same as a new license.

Maybe that information will be helpful; maybe you've already thought that through. But in any case, the main news stands - if you want iCloud syncing enough, the only way to get it is to buy a license from Apple.

    Hello @Phil_Rigby,

Sadly hawkmoth is correct. We're unable to migrate everybody over from the AgileBits Store version to the Mac App Store version that wants to use iCloud as there isn't the capability to do so. It sucks and we wish this wasn't the case.

The only silver lining that I can offer you is that at the moment we have a 40% sale on. It's not perfect but it will at least lessen the blow a little if you really do want to continue using iCloud. Have you considered Dropbox at all? the free account comes with 2GB of space and all versions of 1Password can sync with Dropbox. It may be you have considered it and discounted it as a possibility but I just thought I would ask. I do wish I could reply with a better offer - sorry :(

Thanks guys. I'm ok using Dropbox. Apple should offer a way for users to transition from non-App store to App Store, but that's not your issue. I appreciate the direct and honest response. My only comment may be to make this a little more "up front" in your FAQ - not that you're hiding anything, I'm just saying.

    Thanks for the answers!

    Phil.

  • @Phil_Rigby I'm glad you're happy to continue using Dropbox. Sorry for the confusion on things. We'll work on making iCloud capabilities a bit more apparent. :) Let us know if you have any other questions!
