  • Hey @ityoung! Sorry about that. Have you checked to make sure you don't have multiple apps installed? What version of 1Password are you using? The Mac App Store version of the version from the AgileBits Store? You can check by using these steps. Let us know!

As I wrote above, I had only one copy on my iMac. My previous version was v5.3.2. I downloaded the new version, v5.4, using MacUpdate, unpacked it, and dragged it to my Applications folder. That replacement technique did not work and gave the problems I described above. I reported the problem to AgileBits. I then went to Time Machine and recovered v5.3.2. That worked. I then received an update window through 1Password 5 and said "Yes, update". That worked fine and the latest version is now up and running. Conclusion: You should warn people that simply replacing one version with a newer version using the Finder can lead to problems.

    Hi @ityoung,

You can manually replace one copy of 1Password with another but to do so you need to ensure 1Password mini isn't running as well as 1Password. So that filling in your browser works 1Password mini is set to run all the time and it's this service that allows all the Auto-lock timers work as it keeps track. To quit both 1Password and 1Password mini you need the main 1Password window visible and then the keyboard shortcut ⌃⌘Q will terminate both. Now that you can be confident that neither is running you can manually replace one with the other. Unless there is specific reason to do so though I would always recommend letting 1Password check for updates and using the 1Password updater.

To anybody else reading this thread

AgileBits is not responsible for the copy of 1Password that seems to exist on MacUpdate. We would always recommend downloading it from our site and allowing 1Password to update itself through the internal updater. The updater will ensure 1Password mini is not running and that your vault is not actively in use.

    Hey, Little Bobby,
Regarding that last paragraph. You should tell Megan to stop commenting on MacUpdate if that's not an official version from AgileBits

    Hi @vplewis,

We're sorry if it gives the wrong impression, but @Megan and our social media team are out there all over the web, answering questions and helping 1Password users in need. That's not going to stop.
