I purchased and installed v. 5.4 1Password for Mac, upgrading from v. 3. Can I delete v. 3 files?

It looks as though my upgrade to v 5.4 was successfully installed. I see that I still have files in applications for the older v.3.8.22. Is okay to delete the older files? Also, I have been syncing my data through iCloud. I'm not sure what I need to do about that with the new 5.4 version of 1Password? Finally, will this new 5.4 version be compatible with OS X El Capitan 10.11?

1Password Version: v 5.4
Extension Version: 4.4.3 on Firefox
OS Version: OS X Yosemite 10.10.5
Sync Type: Not Provided

  • Hey @pclitherois!

You can safely move the 1Password 3 app from your Applications folder to the trash, and uninstall the browser extensions you have. Everything else will be managed by the new version of 1Password so there's no reason to remove it from your computer. :)

Finally, will this new 5.4 version be compatible with OS X El Capitan 10.11?

1Password 5 is compatible with El Capitan. Right now, there's one small issue with dragging the window, but that's about the only thing you should come across and a fix will be available soon. If you find anything out of place, please let us know.

the "uninstall browser" instructions on your company's website are confusing and a huge pain in the ass. i would appreciate a bit more attention. i've already purchased and installed v. 5.4, and i want to make sure that i am properly deleting 1Password v. 3 files and the Firefox extension for v. 3. i don't know if you provide phone support. my phone # is [redacted]. thanks.

  • @pclitherois I've removed your phone number from your post to protect your privacy since this is a public forum. I'm sorry the instructions have been confusing. Rather that following those, you can check to make sure 1Password 3 is completely uninstalled by first moving the 1Password 3 app from your Applications folder to the trash. Also open the browsers you have the 1Password extension installed in and uninstall it. Next, here's how to remove any additional leftovers:

    1. Open Finder and under the Go menu select:

      Go to Folder…

    2. Enter this text and press Enter:

      ~/Library/LaunchAgents

(make sure to include the tilde ~)

    3. From the Finder window that opens delete this file, if it exists:

      ws.agile.1PasswordAgent.plist file

    4. Select Go > Go to Folder… again and enter:

      ~/Library/Application Support/1Password

(make sure to include the tilde)

    5. From the Finder window delete this folder, if it exists:

      Agent

    6. Empty Trash, then restart your Mac.

Let us know how it goes! We'll be here to help out if you have any questions. :)

Thank you for the much clearer set of instructions! The content manager of the company's web page needs to enlist you for writing instructions. Moving on, I did exactly what you outlined above. Under # 3 in your outline, the word "file" was not present. However the rest of what precedes "file" was there, and I deleted it. When I performed steps 4 and 5, I noticed that the old keychain for 1 Password was still present in the same file list as "Agent". While i did delete the "Agent" file, I did not delete the keychain file. However, since it looked as though it pertained to the original 1 Password V.3 installed back in 2012, I'm letting you know. Should I leave it there, or delete it?

I actually work for AgileBits. :) What did you find difficult in that knowledge base article? I can make a note of it for our writers to take a look at, because they're very passionate about making sure people understand things fully — we don't want people to be confused. If you can let me know what you found confusing and frustrating, that'd be great.

Sorry, that was a syntax error on my part. You deleted the correct file.

When I performed steps 4 and 5, I noticed that the old keychain for 1 Password was still present in the same file list as "Agent". While i did delete the "Agent" file, I did not delete the keychain file.

Once you started using 1Password 5 and imported your old data from 1Password 3, everything was moved to the 1Password 5 database. It's perfectly fine to delete agilekeychain file because it won't be needed any longer. Just make sure all your data is in 1Password 5 first. ;)

    Hope that helps!

Yes, I realize that you work for Agile Bits. That's why I suggested that your directions were so much clearer than the web page directions. You asked about what in particular was so confusing. The page that you originally suggested. It was a link called "uninstall the browser extensions". That was just a mess. I suggest that you do focus groups with people who are NOT in your offices. Just regular non-geek folks. They will tell you that your website is cumbersome and awful. I offer this feedback to be helpful, not mean. Have it set up like the wonderful response you gave me above. Step by step. And any time that someone starts to tell someone to refer to still another page, hit them in the head with a 2 by 4. The directions need to be on only ONE page. Thanks!

  • @pclitherois Thanks for the additional feedback. Could you explain what you mean by "That was just a mess"? Again, we'd be happy to look into improving things, but we'll need some more details as to what specifically was confusing. Could you please point out some specific things you find confusing?

It's a good idea to keep those additional files just in case. Having a safety net is always a good idea around these parts.

In order to figure out what's going on here, and provide the best solution, I'd like to ask you to create a Diagnostics Report from your Mac.

Attach the Diagnostics Report to an email message addressed to support+forum@agilebits.com.

Please do not post your Diagnostics Report in the forums, but please do include a link to this thread in your email, along with your forum handle so that we can "connect the dots" when we see your Diagnostics Report in our inbox.

You should receive an automated reply from our BitBot assistant with a Support ID number. Please post that number here so we can track down the report and ensure that it is dealt with quickly. :)

Once we see the report we should be able to better assist you. Thanks very much!
