Is it safe to switch to OPVault when running 1Password 4 for Mac?

I'm currently running 1Password 4 v4.4.3 on several of my Macs with OS X 10.9.5, and I'm syncing my 1Password database via Dropbox.

I recently saw this Blog posting from Dale Myers about possible security issues when using 1Password's older agilekeychain format: http://myers.io/2015/10/22/1password-leaks-your-data/

As such, I'd like to switch from the agilekeychain format to the OPVault format instead. This support article implies that it's safe to do this for 1Password 4: https://support.1password.com/switch-to-opvault/

However, I came across this article that seems to imply that 1Password 5 for Mac is required to switch to OPVault: https://discussions.agilebits.com/discussion/comment/222384/#Comment_222384

So is it safe to switch from the agilekeychain format to the OPVault format when using 1Password 4 for Mac and syncing via Dropbox?

Thanks!

    Hi @philbert1 and @cobaltjacket ,

At this time, we recommend updating to 1Password 5 in order to take advantage of .opvault. There were a few bugs in 1Password 4 with respect to .opvault that were only resolved in 1Password 5. Luckily, all operating systems that can run OS X 10.10 can also run 10.11, so updating to the latest version is an option for you if you're keen to switch to .opvault.

I hope this helps, but we're here if you have any further questions or concerns!

    I appreciate the clarification Megan!

Unfortunately I'm a developer so I need to continue running 10.9.5 for at least the next few weeks due to the build of Xcode I'm using (thanks a lot, Apple... /s). But I'm planning to buy a new iMac soon, and that'll force me to update to 10.11. When that happens, I'll switch myself over to 1pass 5 & Opvault.

    Thanks again:-)

Ah, understood! Indeed, as Megan mentioned, OPVault wasn't complete in 1Password 4, which is why we didn't turn it on by default sooner. Just be sure to reach out once you're ready if you need any assistance getting it set up. We're here for you! :)
